New In-Car Internet to work with MyGiG system

Chrysler Gives Details on In-Car Internet Option
Posted: Apr. 16, 2008 09:04 a.m.

We told you last month that Chrysler intended to offer in-car internet access later this year. Yesterday, the automaker provided the first details of the system. CNET reports that the technology "will combine Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity to turn vehicles into mobile hotspots. According to the company, the new wireless technology will be available in future model-year vehicles and as an aftermarket option through Mopar, Chrysler's service arm, by the end of this year."

Edmunds Inside Line says the system "is set up to interact with a vehicle's USB port," and will be "compatible on Chrysler vehicles equipped with the optional MyGiG multimedia system." Chrysler says the system will "deliver Internet and e-mail access and movie and music download capability directly to the vehicle."

MyGiG, however, is not available on some Chrysler vehicles. The Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass and Patriot, for instance, won't be compatible with the new technology unless Chrysler adds MyGiG to future generations of the vehicles.
