2008 Dodge Nitro: What’s New

2008 Dodge Nitro: What’s New
Keeping trailers in line for ’08.
by Marty Padgett (2007-10-17)

A new model for Dodge last year, the Nitro is a mid-size, five-passenger, four-door SUV with macho styling cues. Standard features include a fold-flat, first-row passenger seat and second-row seats with a variety of loading options. The available Load 'n Go cargo floor slides 18 inches rearward to facilitate loading and unloading and holds up to 400 pounds.

The Nitro comes in SXT, SLT, and high-performance R/T trim levels. The standard engine is a 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6, with a 260-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6 the step-up option. The 3.7-liter engine comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission; a five-speed automatic is optional. Nitros with the 4.0-liter engine get a five-speed automatic. The Nitro can be ordered in rear-, full-time four-wheel- or part-time four-wheel-drive configurations.

Air conditioning, traction and stability control are standard equipment. Wheel sizes range from 16 inches on the standard model to available 20-inch rims on the SLT and R/T.

For 2008, a new body kit is available on SXT Nitros. It includes a body-color fascia, flares and bodyside molding. Three new exterior colors are offered, and two-tone seats are in the mix as well. A new Trailer Sway Control system and a rear park assist are now offered.

Optional equipment includes heated leather seats, MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System with AM/FM stereo with CD/DVD/MP3 and full-screen touch screen DVD navigation system, and Sirius satellite radio.

Does the 2008 Model come with all the same shifting, bogging, clunking, stalling and other transmission issues that the '07's came with at no charge?

No issues with the R/Ts (07) as far as I can see here or with mine. Since they have a different engine, transmission, suspension from the other Nitros. I would think that by now ALL 08 Nitros have most past issues resolved and should be trouble free.

I did have mine in for its first Service this week and had a new G40 Recall performed to reprogram the EBC. Don't know what this did but was told it was not the Recall announced last month on brake delay. Just came out this week.

Like most here very pleased with my purchase. It is just that it is hard to find a good published review that many want to use to purchase a new vehicle that hurts!

Still think it is funny that new Vice Chairman of Chrysler got a speeding ticket driving a new Nitro, but he may not. I'm sure it was because of it's distinctive looks that got him in trouble.

Hope so

I really hope they improved the 08 SLT. My 07 has been a complete nightmare since I purchased it. I am in the process of waiting for dodge to complete the paperwork to buy back my 07 and put me into an 08, and even that has been complicated.

The nitro is a beautiful truck, but my biggest concern is that Dodge's customer satisfaction is lacking considerably. It is nearly impossible to have phone calls returned. Unfortunately it got so bad I had to threaten to stand in the dealership and hand out lemons to customers. That got a response quickly.

Since I purchased my 07 in December I have had 2 new torque converters installed, and new rotors installed as mine were warped. (they wanted to resurface them but no way I was going for that). yet, after 2 torque converters were replaced the transmission is still not performing correctly. They wanted to install a "remanufactured" trans into my new vehicle. After weeks of arguing with corporate I decided it was either time to give me my money back or pursue lemon law in court.

Currently waiting on Dodge to give the paperwork to the dealer, but that takes 10-15 days. If i really didn't love the look of the nitro I would have just insisted on my money back, but I have reluctantly agreed to exchanging for the 08 which does not have documented trans problems like the 07.

However, now it seems they want to charge a usage fee on the defective vehicle they sold me. Thats not going to happen, and if they keep insisting on making this more complicated I will just go back to the original plan and fight that matter legally in court.

Love the truck... Hate the Corporation game

So far my dealer has been wonderful. Have only had a couple of minor things: emergency brake not holding and under dash collapse, but they have been great thus far. My problem was with corporate as well. I wanted to move my monthly bill date about a week down the line, since I wasn't asked when I bought where I wanted the payment to fall. Corporate wanted to charge me $60 just to move it, or add it to my bill every month. Morons.
