Recently, the Jeep Liberty finished dead-last in a glossy magazine’s roundup of cute-utes, and that’s a shame, because the Liberty never belonged in that list to begin with. Like the Toyota 4Runner, the Liberty, especially in Renegade form, is a serious off-roader underneath the polite road manners and Commander-clone styling. Perhaps the problem is the name of the vehicle; perhaps if it was still called the Cherokee, it would have done better. The Liberty is, indeed, sold as the Cherokee outside the United States, and was meant to be a new generation of that venerable, groundbreaking SUV.
