Chrysler cancels plans for a new sport-utility vehicle

Waiting for 2010

In the meantime, cutting the Chrysler-branded version of the Journey will leave the company with almost no new or redesigned vehicles to promote at dealerships in 2009

Reading between the lines it must be, since they are very limited with few new products, and sales are not that bad and have increased big time in their overseas markets. I would suspect 09 may be the last year for Nitro as we now know it. It could become a JEEP model, but one thing is for sure JEEP Liberty will survive and Dodge Nitro will not in the future, when a new body change is introduced.

"Analysts have suggested Cerberus might be looking cut its Chrysler losses by selling the Jeep brand but Nardelli said such a move isn't being considered. While the Commander will be cut next year in response to a shrinking market for large SUVs, Jeep remains Chrysler’s top global brand. Nardelli also ruled out bankruptcy as a consideration, saying, "We’re not going to run out of cash."

This quote is as of today. If they continue to cut models they will have nothing to sell since it will be 2010 at least for new products. Again Nitro should be safe for 09.
