06/17/2013

About half of the vehicles purchased in the U.S. are bought by persons over age 45, according to a recent study. Why aren't younger buyers more prevalent?

Research professor Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) researched the automotive buyers market of 2011 and found that the peak probability of buying a new vehicle was for those aged 55 to 64. This was a big leap forward from a study four years earlier which found that probability peaked at ages 35 to 44.

For every 14.6 drivers aged 55-64 in 2011, one purchased a new vehicle. In the 65-74 age group, the rate was 14.9 and it was 15.0 for those aged 45-54. In fact, the younger the driver, the less likely they were to buy a new vehicle. The rate of new vehicle purchases for the so-called "millenial" market (ages 18-24) was 221.8, showing that this group is by far the least likely to buy new (or at all) - about eight times less likely to buy than even those over age 75.

In total, about 47 percent of the vehicles purchased in the United States are bought by buyers aged 45 to 64 - 26 percent by 45-54, 23 percent by 55-64. In 2007, the numbers were in favor of the 35-54 age groups.

Sivak explains the reasons for these changes simply: "There were substantial increases from 2007 to 2011 in the number of drivers 55 to 64 years of age and 65 to 74 years of age. This trend likely reflects the aging of the general population, coupled with the increased probability of older persons having a driver’s license." It's also very likely that economics play a prominent role, given that recent reports have shown that most of the disposable income in this country is now held by those nearing or in retirement.

This would make sense, but automakers seem not to have noticed. Marketing trends still aim for the younger 25-35 age groups which, while a large percentage of the market, only make up about a quarter of it.

"The findings suggest that marketing efforts that focus on drivers 55 to 64 years old should have the highest probability of success per driver. The emphasis on this relatively older age group is further supported by the expected continuation of the graying of the population and the consequent continuation of the increase in the number of older licensed drivers."

Hello all, today in my 07 Nitro , as i got on the highway my temp gauge over heated so i pulled over immediately, I had a severe coolant leak coming from the lower corner (passenger side) of my Rad. I took a pic of the area, looks like a drain plug, but its soft black rubber , so im not sure what it is.It looked like it was actually leaking above that area, where the 2 plastic pieces meet, but it was difficult to tell. Any Ideas?
This Father’s Day weekend the Mopar contingency will compete in the 13th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway, but for Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson it is anything but an ordinary race weekend. While he and his Mopar team’s engine builder and father Roy Johnson, have a plethora of good memories at the Greenville, Tenn.-native’s home track, they are hoping to add one more special one this Sunday.

While both men have won sportsman races as drivers at Bristol Dragway, and their Pro1 Mopar Dodge Avenger has earned three consecutive No. 1 qualifier honors, a Pro Stock win has eluded them. The father and son team came as close to their first professional win at their home track as is actually technically possible in last year’s final round of eliminations by finishing runner-up to Mike Edwards in the closest finish in NHRA history, a race that was decided by less than .0000 of a second.

“I wasn’t horribly disappointed losing last year in the closest side-by-side final round in NHRA history,” said Allen Johnson who will run for the first time in front of hometown fans as the defending NHRA Pro Stock World Champion. “It was certainly a little disappointing, but it was an exciting finish for the fans and teams alike and you can’t be disappointed about that. We were just on the wrong side of the bullet there. It was a great race and we knew it would be. We almost got it done and that fueled us for the rest of the year and we are hoping to do the same thing this year, but come away with a win and fuel us for the championship race."

The elder Johnson has had two big wins in a Mopar as a driver at Bristol Dragway in the early 1970s in IHRA Stock and Super Stock classes. The younger Johnson’s sole victory at Bristol was earned in 1981 competing in the Super Stock class as a teenager aboard his father’s 1971 Dodge Challenger with a 340 cubic inch wedge engine (SS3FA).

“He did that motor all by himself,” Roy Johnson recounted proudly as he reminisced about how he made his son work on his own engine. “Allen ground and fit every bit of it. He worked hard on that car and earned that win but not without a little bit of luck. He actually red lighted in the first elimination round but his competitor failed technical inspection because the car was too light and Allen was back in and went on to win it all. It was his first major win right here at home in Bristol.”

For Christmas four years ago, Johnson bought his father a 2009 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak which Roy took to Bristol Dragway the following May for his first runs behind the wheel in nearly 30 years posting a best elapsed time pass of 10.65-seconds at 125.95 mph.

After working 17 years alongside his father, Johnson believes celebrating Father’s day at their home track in front of their hometown friends and family is only fitting.

“It's Father's Day and racing with my father and being close to my father, and try to win this race is a special incentive,” said Johnson as he recalled some of his favorite highlights in racing together so far including their first pro win and their crowning achievement, the 2012 NHRA Pros Stock World Championship. “It would have to be the first one in Richmond together in '99, and then the championship last year at the banquet when I brought him on stage and it was pretty emotional for both of us. That's just something you'll never forget. We almost lost him in 2009 [to a heart attack] and to come back and have the success we did last year was incredible and means the world to me. Winning with my father at Bristol is the next item on our bucket list. We almost got it done for the family, friends, employees last year and there is no doubt it would be special for everyone including the hometown fans.”

Johnson is third in the championship points standings with 698 points, right on the heels of his Mopar teammate Jeg Coughlin Jr. who is in second spot with 701 points on the strength of a win and three final round appearances. Coughlin has a Pro Stock win to his credit at the storied race track, earned after securing the No. 1 qualifier position in 2007. HEMI®-powered drivers Vincent Nobile and V. Gaines are sixth and ninth in the points respectively.

Don Schumacher Racing’s Mopar Funny Car driver Ron Capps is the defending winner with a total of three wins at Thunder Valley. His teammate and new points leader Matt Hagan is looking for his first victory at Bristol to add to his stats sheet after earning two No. 1 qualifier spots and two wins in four final round appearances this season in the “Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar” Dodge Charger R/T.

Challenging Hagan in the second spot of the championship rankings is another Mopar teammate Johnny Gray, who has three wins in what has already been a highly-successful 2013 retirement tour. Gray has dedicated his final year behind the wheel to honoring his father, the late John R. Gray, and carries his father's likeness on the quarter panel of his striking Pitch Energy Dodge. This Father's Day weekend, the longtime drag racer sees no better way to honor his dad's memory than to put the car in the winner's circle on Sunday.

Hi, I'm new to this forum...and I'm going to have A LOT of questions I'm sure. I bought a 2007 with 72000kms on it...in pristine condition. I live on Vancouver Island and that's about average kms per year for vehicles around these parts.

I read a lot about the roof rack issue....Mine did not come with the bars, priced them at 300 bucks!!! and a bit of a chore to take on and off...heard about the noise issue (I have the sunroof). What I wanted was a rack I could put on and take off in a snap....so I could carry a couple of kayaks and/or maybe a sheet of plywood or WHY (I used to have a pick up)......so what I did was take the rails off to fit four framing 90degree anchors (galvanized)....after slotting them (like the openings in the tracks) I sandwiched them between the roof and tracks. Drilled four quarter inch holes in the vertical faces to accept quarter inch SS bolts and wingnuts. Then I made two roof racks to fit and rest on the rails. The cross pieces are just two by two material...they come on or off in minutes, are plenty strong enough and do the job for me. The framing anchors that live permanently on the roof are not even noticed when the racks are off....which is the vast majority of the time...Cheers

A new study from AAA says that using hands-free devices to talk or text on the phone while driving isn’t as safe as it’s made out to be. Researchers monitored driver’s brainwaves, eye movements and other areas, to find which tasks distract drivers the most. The study found that things such as listening to the radio weren’t very distracting. Talking on the cell phone, even hands-free was rated a moderate risk, but researchers found that using voice activated features to listen and respond to emails or texts was even more dangerous. The study concludes that drivers should be better educated about these devices and that voice-activated features should be limited to things like cruise or climate control while driving.

Word has it Dodge could be killed off by Fiat in the near future, as the Chrysler brand will have to cope with new holes in its lineup once the Avenger gets discontinued and other nameplates moved under the “Pentastar” badge.
According to Ward’s Auto, quoting industry sources, the Dodge lineup will be thinned even more after the Avenger ends production early next year. “At least two products” are already scheduled to “migrate to the Chrysler brand or be discontinued”, while the Dart and the Journey are likely to get Chrysler or Fiat-badged replacements, the report adds.

That would leave Dodge with only three vehicles, the Durango, the Challenger and the Charger unless brand-new models are being introduced. Furthermore, other rumors suggest that the next-gen Challenger, which could arrive in 2015, could follow the Viper and move over at SRT as a revival of the Barracuda moniker.

Further complicating the whole matter, the Durango is already sharing its platform with Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, while the Charger might very well be replaced by the new Chrysler 300. Whatever the case, Dodge’s fate is said to be decided by 2016.

The last Chrysler-owned marque to be discontinued was Plymouth, with its models withdrawn from the market or simply rebranded in 2001. Plymouth was introduced in 1928 as an entry-level competitor to Ford and Chevrolet.
