Unhappy problem when fueling up

I recently purchased a 2007 Nitro SLT 4x4, with 18K miles, and when I fill up the tank, as soon as the nozzle shuts off indicating the tank is full, about a half gallon of gas comes gushing out of the tank. Naturally gas gets all over the car, the ground and is still coming out of the nozzle. I'm not topping off, in fact I don't even get the chance. I've never had this kind of problem with any other vehicle before and would like some sort of clue of what this is before contact the dealer. Has anyone else had this problem, or familiar with what this is?

Welcome!
Strange you posted this issue since I had this happen to me yesterday for the first time!

I have had several "Engine Malfunction Indicator Lights" (code PO441) and was told to purchase the most expensive Factory gas cap I have ever purchased (68030940AA)to eliminate this issue after a $47.05 service charge.

Surprisingly this seems to have corrected this issue but now I too have the same problem! Not sure but must be a venting issue and will see what can be done in February when I take my Nitro in for service. Let us know what if anything solves your (our) problem. Thanks for the Post.

Dealer just called and said vent valve inside of tank is defective and they have ordered a replacement tank! (under warranty) They explained this valve is inside the tank in case the vehicle is involved in a rollover accident and therefore cuts-off fuel leakage and lessens any chance for an explosion! Said this is a common issue not only with the Nitro but the Jeep Liberty and was a parts supplier defect. Said it will be next week before replacement tank will arrive. I took it in with just 1/8 tank of gas, just-in-case the tank had to be removed. Good call on my part. Told them just keep my Nitro until repaired since I really don't need it unless another heavy snow hits this weekend as it may. Great service since this overflow problem had only happened once! I have read this could be a $1,200 fix if not under warranty.

This is another reason larger Dealerships are better for service since there is a good possibility they have already seen an issue that you might be experiencing and know how to resolve it. Will update.

Mine has been replaced (plastic gas tank PN 68034793AA) now and did fill it up today with no issue, but since it only did it once anyway, I'm very pleased that my Dealer did not give me a hassle. This is the type of thing that pays one to follow and become members of a "Discussion Group" for whatever type of car or truck they drive. How else would an owner know about this?

Talking to my Chrysler Dealer Technician today I found that the replacement plastic gas tank for the Nitro only pays 1 hour labor, and performing an "Internet Search" I found a replacement tank for only $363.00. This is far less than previously reported. So if your Dealer says it is not covered you may want to consider buying a replacement yourself, if they want a large sum to do the job. Technician said it was a simple procedure? Hope this new info might help someone.

CONSUMER COMPLAINT: ODI Case Number: 10311179

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Details: SPLASH BACK OF GASOLINE WHEN FILLING UP FUEL TANK. INCIDENT OCCURS JUST ABOUT EVERY TIME TANK IS FILLED AND THE CONSEQUENCES ARE THAT A LARGE AMOUNT OF GASOLINE SHOOTS BACK OUT OF THE FILLING NOZZLE ALL OVER THE PAINTED SURFACE OF THE VEHICLE AND ON TO THE SURFACE OF THE AREA IN WHICH PARKED. IN ADDITION TO AGGRAVATION, ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE, PAINT DAMAGE, THERE ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCES THAT COULD OCCUR IF SOME SORT OF AN IGNITION SOURCE OCCURRED AT THE TIME IT HAPPENED. CONTROLLING THE FLOW/SPEED OF GASOLINE FROM THE GAS PUMP THROUGH THE NOZZLE INTO THE TANK FILLER TUBE DOES NOT LESSEN THE PROBLEM. I AM GOING TO DISCUSS THIS MATTER WITH MY DODGE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ON 18 FEB, 2010 TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE MATTER. *TR

Gas Overflowing

12/3/10

Hi Rick,

I have filed my complaint with NHTSA, and have ODI #10366833. Not sure that I see that one on your list, but I may have missed it.

In preparation for writing several letters, I have obtained contact information from the following:
1) Chrysler Customer Assistance (in addition to having already had a phone
conversation with them)
2) Environmental Protection Agency
3) Missouri Department of Natural Resources
4) Missouri Dept. of Agriculture - Petroleum Inspection Program

Not sure what it will take to negotiate a recall, but more of us need to get on record.

Anne

Gas Overflowing

12/6/10
To everyone that has the problem with the gas overflowing on the 2007 Dodge Nitro when attempting to fill the tank - PLEASE INCLUDE IN YOUR REPORT TO THE NHTSA that this is most likely caused by a valve in the gas tank that is there to prevent an explosion in the event of a rollover accident. The valve is defective, and thus the gas spills out, and your car could possibly explode in a rollover accident. I have read that this is a manufacturing defect, and that Chrysler knows about it. Had I been more thorough when filing my complaint with NHTSA I would have included this information. Now I am getting ready to write to NHTSA, as it appears I cannot add to the ODI I have on file with them. I will also be bringing this dangerous situation to the attention of the others I mentioned previously that I will be writing to. You are possibly driving a dangerous vehicle. This is about more than gasoline spilling at the gas station !!!! Please, everyone, get the word out there. We need to get Chrysler to issue a recall on this vehicle NOW !!! If you already have an ODI on file with NHTSA, then write to them and tell them this additional information and stress how dangerous this is.

Thank you.
