True Cold Air 3" intake for $175!

Okay, I know this subject has been beat to DEATH, but I still see posts regarding them all the time. What kills me, is when someone that wants to purchase one instead of making their own, the cost of these items, as shown below, are outrageous (just examples)

What I mean by a, "True Cold Air Intake," is an intake that actually intakes cold air (at least ambient temps) and not under the hood heat. I have done numerous test on most of the vehicles I own regarding this matter. If you can obtain CAI temps at ambient or as close as you can get, this is the ultimate goal!
From the test I have done on my own, and just my opinion, I disagree with the builders that have metal housing that wraps around the filter creating a new air box. The metal gets heat soaked besides the fact it doesn't seal tight up against the hood. This also lets hot air from the motor into the intake. Also, there is no location for the cold air to enter. Why the factory builds an air tube where if done right, can have cold air available but blocks it off at the grill area. Then there is the crankcase tube that these after market, along with the manufactures, build into the intake tubing/air box. The oil and nasty crud that comes out of the crankcase is now being sucked into your intake. I don't have emissions where I live so I do it different. But the way I build mine, if you do have these requirements, you can use the stock crankcase tube. Even though you might have emissions, I would purchase a Catch can if you have the funds. This creates the same effect as the tube but without having the gunk going back through you intake.
Another problem I have had personally is with the oil that is used on these cleanable filters. You're better off with a cleanable filter but a dry filter. These oils contaminate the sensors that vehicles these days have so many of and are dependant upon for the vehicle to run!

Following are some pics of the CAI I have fabricated for my 08 3.7liter. This will also allow you to return your CAI system back to stock if you ever sell your vehicle. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. The $175 I posted, again just my opinion, would be what I could build and sell an item like this for and still make a decent profit but still give a huge savings to customers. I understand buisnesses are into it to make money, that's what we all work for. But when ya gouge your customers to the tune of anywhere from $100-$174 for something that takes little thought and effort.......WOW!

This will make it a True CAI along with having it totally enclosed to keep the cold air in the box letting it into the intake. This is the tubing I spoke earlier that the factory installs & leads up to the grill but then is blocked off, not letting all the cold air in that it can:

These are the items I spoke of regarding if you don't have to worry about emissions. I removed the stock crankcase hose/tubing, closing off the crankcase outlet and the air box inlet. Then I just added a filter onto the oil tube where you oil screw on lid would go. This allows for the crankcase to still breath/release the crud that would enter your intake. This doesn't create any codes either!

I hope this helped to answer questions some might have or give others ideas for their own! If ya don't care to make your own and like what ya see, send me a PM!

Yes, this is on my wifes 3.7. All of my vehicles have CAI's that I build. I wouldn't build them on another vehicle first unless I knew they worked. Where I live is at 7,000 ft of altitude where the air is very thin. So the colder the air and more mass amounts I can feed my motors, the better they run. The wifes Nitro gained 1 mpg's with this set-up on. As far as power, I haven't dynoed it. But the little gains that you'll get fron any CAI is going to be very hard to tell just by driving it. This is applicable with other after market CAI's as well. What people notice, is the different sound because they are louder due to the open box most have. This creates the illusion that their vehicle has gained HP. I am not saying you don't gain hp with after marked CAI's, but not enough where you'll notice just by driving like you would with a blower, turbo, meth, nitrous ect.

Regarding the filter in place of the oil cap. The filter does the same function as the breather tube from the crank case to the air box in stock applications and to the intake air tube on after market CAI's. It just acts as a breather venting the crud and pressure from the crank case. The way I do it with the filter, it still vents but doesn't go back into your intake polluting it with the oil and crap. The amount that comes out of the case is minimal, but over time it can cause serious issues. If you do it the way I have, you will see how oiled the filter will get and how fast. You will have to clean the filter as it's a cleanable filter like some of the after market Air filters.
