I wanted to add some personal experience to the information here as well.
I read all over that if you have a firmware version older than 9.713 that you should upgrade to 9.713 before going further. UNLESS you have an HDD corruption, in which case you should go to 9.799 then 9.713.
While sound advice, one problem is that it's not always apparent that you have an HDD corruption, therefore upgrading to 9.713 can be fatal to the device when the user is unaware of any prior problems.
I had 9.556, read all the info, decided based on what I read that 9.713 is what I needed as I had encountered no signs of problems on the system. However, after doing the upgrade to 9.713 my system was inoperable. I had about 90% functionality, but what I didn't have was any audio other than for navigation, a working disk drive (preventing any further upgrading for troubleshooting purposes), uconnect and voice operation (neither worked, at all), access to music and pictures on the HDD, and a normal responding system (everything was very slow).
I was fortunately still under warranty for another five months and the dealership agreed to replace the radio under warranty.
Had the prevailing knowledge across the internet forums read "If you have older than 9.713, upgrade to 9.799 first, then 9.713 regardless of known corruption issues" I think I would have been okay. This covers those who have the HDD corruption issue and those who have no idea if they have the HDD corruption issue.
The only question I have that might negate this new suggestion is, will a 9.799 upgrade to a system with no HDD corruption cause any harm? I'm assuming no and that it's a safe route to go 9.799 before 9.713 in all cases.
Thank you for compiling everything you have here.
