I would like to thank you for being a subscriber and for your continued support. As the Chief Executive Officer of SiriusXM, I spend much of my time focused on satellites, programming and employees, which are all very important, but nothing is more important to me than our subscribers. I understand that the primary reason you subscribe to SiriusXM is the unparalleled choice we offer, and since launching over a decade ago, we have continuously expanded the variety and quality of the programming we provide.
And the best is yet to come. We are building an exciting future that includes even more channels, greater diversity, exclusive subscriber benefits and more flexibility in the ways you can listen to SiriusXM.
I hope you understand that to continue bringing this unbeatable listening experience to our subscribers, there will be a modest rate increase of $1.00 to $1.54 per month — about 5 cents a day or less — on most SiriusXM audio packages. This increase will take effect on your next renewal date that occurs on or after January 1, 2012.
Because we know this increase comes during challenging economic times, we have provided some options below that you may want to consider, including several ways you could save:
— Keep what you have now, and your SiriusXM package will continue to offer you incredible value, with channels and channels of commercial-free music, plus sports, news, talk, entertainment and more — all in one place.
— If you’re paying invoice fees, save $2.00 per billing cycle simply by changing to credit or debit card billing. It’s far more convenient and a great way to save.
— Take advantage of our Annual Plan discounts, which are available on most SiriusXM packages and offer you better value because they include a month free (you pay for 11, you get 12). If you switch to an Annual Plan before January 1, 2012, you’ll be billed at the current rates for your first year. Installment billing is available for most Annual Plans.
— Consider upgrading to our All Access package, which gives you all the channels available for your radio, plus access to SiriusXM programming on your computer, smartphone or other mobile device, for a great bundled price. It is our best value.
As we continue to add exciting new content and find more ways for you to enjoy our programming, we will work hard to control costs and create efficiencies to ensure SiriusXM continues to be the best value for your entertainment dollar.
On behalf of everyone at SiriusXM, thank you for your support.
With the new year came an announcement that Sirius XM Satellite Radio struck an interesting deal with Auto Nation . It is a deal that works well for both companies. Auto Nation gets to provide used car buyers with the benefit of three months of satellite radio, and Sirius XM gets a chance to show off its product in the hope that these car buyers will fall in love with and keep the service. In simple terms, any used car sold by participating Auto Nation dealers, regardless of brand, will get a three month promotional subscription to Sirius XM.
Sirius XM is fairly new at the used car game, and until recently, the numbers simply did not stack up to get too aggressive in that segment of the market. However, last summer the company announced similar deals with GM and Nissan that helped pave the way for the company to announce nearly 540,000 subscribers in Q4.
Before going any further, there are a few points that need to be understood by investors:
When the car is sold the consumer gets satellite radio for three months, but is NOT counted in the subscriber numbers of Sirius XM
Only after the three month promotional period can the customer be counted as a subscriber, and only IF they elect to become self-paying
Cars sold in the current quarter are not eligible to become subscribers until the next quarter.
Sirius XM pays a fee to run these promotions, and these fees impact metrics such as EBITDA, and Free Cash Flow and Subscriber Acquisition Costs .
People who do not become subscribers after the promotional period are NOT counted in churn (they were never a subscriber), and not counted as a deactivation.
One true benefit to this type of deal for Sirius XM is that it allows an expensive to install factory radio a second (or perhaps even a third) chance at becoming a paying radio. The big cost of these "used car radios" has been previously absorbed in another previous quarter's, perhaps even years ago. That is not to say that these "used car radios" are free of a subscriber acquisition cost. Any fee paid to Auto Nation will be accounted for in the current quarter's SAC numbers. That is not bad though, and the numbers are substantial enough for it to be worthwhile. Consider these metrics:
In Q3 of 2011 Auto Nation sold about 45,000 used cars.
My research indicates that the "penetration rate" (the number of used cars equipped with satellite radio) is between 40% and 45%.
This would imply that of the 45,000 used cars-- somewhere between 18,000 and 20,000 -- would have been eligible for the Sirius XM program.
Sirius XM has stated that it is seeing a conversion rate (percentage of promotional subscriptions that convert to self-pay) in the used car segment of "the mid 30's".
This would imply that about 19,000 cars would have become non-paid (not counted in the subscriber number) promotional subscribers during that quarter, and that about 6,650 would have converted to full self-paying subscribers the following quarter.
While these numbers may not seem huge, they can begin to tell the story of the used car market. Consider this-- Auto Nation represents a couple of hundred dealerships. The GM deal that Sirius XM inked last summer incorporates over 2,000 dealerships! Thus, in very simple terms, if Auto Nation is delivering almost 7,000 subscribers in a quarter, is it outside the realm of possibility that 2,000 participating dealerships can add 70,000? And we still have not considered the Nissan deal, which likely adds another 500 dealerships to the mix (out of 1,500 dealerships). That would mean the potential from Nissan adds another 17,000 to the mix.
As you can see, the potential of these three deals alone (Auto Nation, GM, and Nissan) is an impressive 94,000 net subscribers each quarter. As Sirius XM signs up more used car dealers, that number will increase.
Given the success of the initial deals (I would estimate that the GM and Nissan deals accounted for 60,000 to 80,000 subscribers in Q4 of 2011), and the fact that Sirius XM announced 3 of them in 2011, I am looking for another 6 to 8 such announcements in 2012. The numbers could grow quickly.
Sirius XM Radio (SIRI), satellite radio company, said it added 540,000 subscribers in Q4, 1.7 mil for 2011, ending with a total 21.9 mil. Shares rose 2%.
Just got off the phone w/ listener care after trying to get the 6 month /$25 deal, which is for existing subs only.
I was told the best deal they have for new radios is: 6 months XM Select for $29.99
Taxes and fees are extra, all in all i paid $35.49 for it, and I'm listening to my radio now. Great deal for me, since I never see any deals for new subs.

Chrysler Group LLC has become the first auto manufacturer to sign on to install in its vehicles the new Sirius XM radios that can carry more Spanish-language channels and other content, the companies said on Thursday.
Sirius XM's new radios are available in stores, but Chrysler is the first company to outfit new vehicles with them. They will be available in Chrysler Ram 1500 trucks and Viper sports cars, the companies said in a statement during the New York International Auto Show.
Chrysler, the No. 3 U.S. automaker, will carry the new radios exclusively for a year. Sirius XM has said it was working with other automakers but no accouchements have been made yet.
The satellite radio provider's main growth comes from its automobile listeners, who sign up for the service after they receive a few months of promotions when buying a car. The company said in February that its radios are installed in 67 percent of new vehicles sold in the United States, up from 62 percent a year earlier.
Sirius XM, which has 21.9 million subscribers, is facing increased competition from Internet radio companies such as Pandora, which car companies such as General Motors are touting in TV advertisements. Pandora said on Thursday it had 51 million active listeners at the end of March.
The satellite radio company is trying to stand out by paying for exclusive content such as Howard Stern's radio show and 19 channels of Spanish-language programming.
Shares of Sirius XM were 4 cents higher at $2.33 while Fiat, which has been running Chrysler since a 2009 bailout deal backed by the U.S. government, saw its shares rise 3 percent in Italy on Thursday.

Sirius XM Counts Record Subs
by Erik Sass, Wednesday, May 2, 2012
Satellite radio broadcaster Sirius XM has recruited a record number of subscribers, growing 8.3% to 22.3 million for the first quarter. Total revenues jumped from $724 million to $805 million over the same time period, the company revealed in its first-quarter results.
A large part of the company’s growth came from new vehicle sales and vehicle trial subscriptions converting to paying subscriptions, with 45% of all new vehicle owners deciding to convert to paying subscriptions -- the same as first-quarter 2011.
Looking to the future, Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin said improving car sales will continue to drive growth for the satellite broadcaster in 2012, projecting total subscriber growth of 1.5 million by the end of the year -- revised upwards from the company’s earlier forecast of 1.3 million net additions.
Subscriber churn, an important measure of the company’s stability, decreased slightly from 2% in 2011 to 1.9% this year, reflecting the increased share of vehicle-based subscriptions, which tend to be less volatile. Karmazin noted that churn decreased despite an increase in the subscription price.
Advertising revenues remain a fairly small part of Sirius XM’s business, growing from $16.6 million in the first quarter of 2011 to $18.7 million this year (remaining stable at 2.3% of total revenues).
Karmazin said the company hopes to woo new subscribers and retain existing ones, with a range of new content and features delivered via satellite and Internet: “We are rolling out more satellite channels via factory-installed 2.0 radios, and we are improving our online offering by delivering even more live sports coverage, updated apps with enhanced features, and later this year, on-demand content and personalized radio.”
