TOLEDO, OH (WTVG) -- The numbers are in and they're looking good for Chrysler.
August sales for the automaker are up. The Toledo-built models all posted significant gains, especially the Dodge Nitro. But it's all how you look at it.
It's typically third in sales for the Toledo-built three. Last month, the Dodge Nitro raced ahead and set the pace for big gains at Chrysler.
The company reported a seven percent sales increase overall compared to August of 2009. Sales of the Jeep brand went up 17 percent versus the same month last year. That includes a steady pace by the Jeep Wrangler.
It weathered the auto industry storm last year, often boosting sales when others stalled. Last month, Wrangler sales shot up 37 percent over the year before.
Sales of the Jeep Liberty climbed 56 percent. And the Dodge Nitro, a perennial third, made the biggest jump -- sales went up 66 percent. Keep in mind, we're talking 2,500 SUVs, up from 1,500. By comparison, the Wrangler sold close to 7,700.
But by any measure, it's a gain. Also notable were sales of the Dodge Challenger. They went up 190 percent, coinciding with a return to NASCAR after 30 years. For the first time, a challenger won in the NASCAR Nationwide series at Michigan International Speedway.
Chrysler declares that victory a win for sales. Chrysler Group also adds: it is the only major auto manufacturer to post a year-over-year sales increase in August.
GM's August sales fell 7 percent from July and an even sharper 25 percent from August of 2009, when sales were boosted by the government's "Cash for Clunkers" rebates. As for Ford, the automaker saw sales slip 5 percent from July
