Chrysler workers await news on model cuts, changes

Chrysler workers await news on model cuts, changes

08/20/2009

DETROIT — At a Jeep factory in Toledo, Ohio, workers fear that Chrysler's new Italian management will scrap one of the two models they make, costing some of them their jobs.

The same anxiety is felt at Chrysler Group LLC plants around the country as Fiat SpA CEO Sergio Marchionne, who now controls the company, readies a new plan that will include cutting redundant models and adding smaller Fiats to the lineup.

A person briefed on Marchionne's plan says at least some details will be announced before or during the Frankfurt auto show in Germany, which begins Sept. 15. The person didn't want to be identified because plans are not final.

Marchionne has ordered U.S. executives to come up with model cuts so a particular car or truck is sold only under one of the company's three brands, Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep.

At the 2.1 million-square-foot Toledo North Jeep plant, which makes the Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty midsize sport utility vehicles, workers are worried that Marchionne will cut the slow-selling Nitro to focus on the Liberty.

"It's not a high volume of sales," said Dan Henneman, chairman of United Auto Workers Local 12, which represents the north plant's 1,100 hourly workers. "We know that for sure. We look at the orders daily for what we build at the plant."

So far this year, Chrysler has sold only 11,000 of the boxy Nitros, down 57 percent from the first seven months of 2008. The Liberty hasn't fared much better, selling only 26,579, or 41 percent fewer than last year.

Apprehension about job losses extends over the Ohio border to Kokomo, Ind., where Chrysler has a huge complex employing 1,800 hourly workers who make transmissions for much of its model lineup including the Nitro.

Mike Hunter, who repairs gauges on the plant's machinery, fears some Fiat transmissions will be used to replace the Chrysler transmissions he helps make, or that products like the Nitro could be cut.

Aaron Bragman, an auto industry analyst with IHS Global Insight, said it's important for Chrysler to pare redundant models as it tries to put all three brands in its remaining dealerships.

In addition to the Nitro, Chrysler could cut one of its minivans and one of its smallest offerings, possibly the Jeep Compass. One of the company's midsize cars, the Chrysler Sebring or the Dodge Avenger, also could go.

"There has to be elimination. They do have too much product overlap," Bragman said. "Now that you've got all three brands in the same showroom, it's even more glaring."

Even before Chrysler entered and exited bankruptcy protection, Vice Chairman Jim Press said the company wanted to slim its model lineup.

Bragman said the company can save millions by eliminating separate tooling and parts numbers for duplicate models.

"They need to get their house in order as soon as possible," Bragman said.

Chrysler's sales are down 42 percent so far this year. The company lost $8 billion last year and the federal government has allocated $8 billion to keep it afloat until Fiat can bring in new products and turn the once-proud company around.

Chrysler and Fiat have said they will build Fiat subcompacts and compacts in North America, so it's likely whatever Chrysler sells in those categories will be replaced by Italian hardware. It's also possible that Italian midsize cars could be built here, replacing Chrysler's lackluster entries in the segment.

Chrysler has not yet finalized any product plans, said spokesman Rick Deneau, and it has no plans that he is aware of to shed further models.

"To simply think about the potential for subtraction is not the way we're looking at it," he said. "We're looking at additions. Obviously we're going to consider replacements. Certainly it's been expressed that there's a desire and intent for producing vehicles here in this market."

At the Frankfurt show, Chrysler is expected to announce new subcompact and compact cars based on Fiat's Bravo and Punto architecture, the Milan daily Corriere della Sera reported on Tuesday. The Bravo and the Punto are two of the cars — along with the Fiat 500 and the hot-selling Panda — that have helped drive sales and brand renewal at Fiat since Marchionne took the helm.

The Punto and the slightly larger Grande Punto launched in 2005 have been Fiat's flagship models, fueling sales, while the Bravo five-door, a redesign of older three-door and five-door models produced that was launched in 2007, is its main offering in the four-door sedan segment.

Until the announcement is made, workers at Chrysler plants with products on the bubble will continue to be nervous.

Henneman said workers at his plant, Chrysler's newest, have done all they can, approving flexible work rules and adopting Fiat's World Class Manufacturing system.

And Hunter is optimistic that Marchionne can turn Chrysler around even though previous owners, Diamler AG and private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, could not.

"I like their products, actually," he said. "If you've got a decent sports car that's going to get some mileage. I think they got a shot to make that happen."

With buyouts and plant closings, Chrysler should have reduced its costs to the point where it can become profitable again, Hunter said.

"You would think that we've got to be pretty streamlined," he said. "We're still making it happen with a lot less work force and a lot less resources."

2010 Avenger and Sebring

Avenger and Sebring earn highest IIHS safety rating

Posted Tuesday, Aug 25, 2009, 11:12 am in Employee News

Chrysler Group LLC announced today that the 2010 Chrysler Sebring and 2010 Dodge Avenger have earned the 2009 Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

“We are proud to receive the highest possible ratings from IIHS for the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger,” said Scott Kunselman, Senior Vice President – Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. “These sought-after achievements highlight Chrysler’s leadership in safety and security technology and occupant protection.”

When it comes to safety and security, the 2010 Chrysler Sebring and 2010 Dodge Avenger employ a two-fold approach: passive features, including pre-tensioning seat belt retractors and supplemental side-curtain air bags, are combined with accident-avoidance features, including responsive steering, braking, handling and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

“A vehicle that earns the Top Safety Pick designation provides the best overall protection in the three most common kinds of crashes,” said Adrian Lund, President – Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “Top-level crash-test performance plus electronic stability control to help keep drivers out of crashes are the tough criteria needed to earn this award.”

Available safety equipment on the 2010 Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger includes ESC with traction control, Brake Assist and ABS, driver and front-passenger active head restraints, front seat-mounted side airbags and advanced multi-stage front airbags. The two vehicles also are equipped with Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) for child safety seats.

Ram pickup is only new Chrysler for '10

Tuesday, September 1, 2009

Ram pickup is only new Chrysler for '10

Chrysler Group LLC has only one all-new vehicle for 2010 but is adding fuel-efficient versions of existing products and making more features standard in a lineup that must carry it through next year.

The single new offering is the heavy-duty Dodge Ram full-size pickup. But the new Chrysler, in partnership with Fiat SpA, is hoping some pricing changes and fuel-efficiency increases will help bridge the gap until new vehicles arrive in 2011 and Fiat-engineered small cars are introduced.

Details of Chrysler's 2010 model offerings, released today, pale against those of crosstown competitors. But consumers may not notice, said Jim Hall, with 2953 Analytics LLP in Birmingham. Ford Motor Co., for example, has already advertised new models, including the F-150 and Mustang, so consumers may not still think of them as new, he said.

"The saving grace for Chrysler is that it's a crummy market," Hall said, adding the dearth would be more evident in a hot market.

The automaker must make the most of what it has, he said. Success will largely depend on how the products are marketed.

Even that is still being pinned down as Chrysler reviews its advertising contracts with Omnicon Group LLC's BBDO and looking at what other agencies have to offer.

"As we launch a new company with a brand-focused organization, we are looking for fresh ways to communicate in the marketplace," said Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson. "As a result, we are currently soliciting creative input on a limited number of specific projects from a select group of agencies."

Jim Arrigo, a Florida dealer and co-chairman of the Chrysler Dealer Council, said promises of better marketing will make the difference. And dealers appreciate having more say in how vehicles are equipped as well as not having a glut of vehicles pushed on them that the company made on spec and often didn't match what consumers wanted.

Entry-level versions offered

Among the changes for 2010 are the addition of entry-level versions of the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot with a smaller 2.0-liter engine (2.4 liters was the smallest before) and five-speed manual transmission to provide 23 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway for the Dodge, slightly less for the Jeeps. These represent an improvement in highway driving of 2 mpg for the Dodge and 1 mpg for the Jeeps.

The Caliber also gets an upgrade to its interior with soft-touch materials, a new instrument panel, center storage bin, armrests and other accents.

Jeep Liberty, Dodge Nitro and the light-duty Ram pickup have a system for 2010 that turns off the fuel during deceleration to increase fuel efficiency. The driver will know it is happening when the "eco" button on the dashboard lights up. Much of the 2010 lineup, including all Jeeps, are equipped with the eco feature.

The Dodge Journey gains 1 mpg in efficiency with a 3.5-liter V-6.

Many of the tweaks to the lineup make optional features standard. Some vehicles come with a price cut, like the Dodge Caravan SXT minivan with a base price that is $2,180 lower for 2010.

The new heavy-duty Ram pickup comes as a crew cab for the first time, allowing Dodge to play in the highest volume part of the market. It will be followed up for 2011 with a new fleet of commercial trucks, as the Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs will debut.

And the 2011 model year is when the Jeep Grand Cherokee with Chrysler's new Pentastar family of V-6 engines and the redesigned Chrysler 300 enter the market.

The outgoing Grand Cherokee drops the top-of-the-line Overland model for this year.

The Jeep Commander remains in the lineup in what could prove to be the final year for the slow-selling SUV.

The Chrysler brand will see changes to the creased hood on the Sebring sedan and convertible, which will be replaced with a conventional and smoother hood for 2010. New wheels complete the look. Inside, the gauges have been redesigned.

Chrysler's new management decided to keep the Dodge Viper and extend the 2009 model year. There are four new colors, including a "snakeskin green" and a new interior with tan Nappa leather seats.

Sebring quietly refreshed

Sebring quietly refreshed

September 3rd, 2009

Chrysler Sebring was given a mild refresh with active front-row head restraints and a new instrument cluster with LED backlighting; it also had a hood swap, losing the strakes, and the 17- and 18-inch wheels were replaced.

The press book did not mention the head restraints, new cluster, or hood, but dealers received materials which highlighted these features.

Both Chrysler Sebring Sedan and Convertible are listed as being available only in Limited form in press materials.

Cool 2010 models offer safety &security

Friday, September 11, 2009

Chrysler Group LLC's 2010 models offer safety, security

Auburn Hills, MI - Chrysler employs a two-fold safety approach: conventional safety features, such as pretensioning, Constant-force Seat-belt Retractors (CFR) and supplemental side-curtain air bags, combined with accident-avoidance features, including Chrysler Group LLC's exclusive Rear Cross Path (RCP), minivan-exclusive Blind-spot Monitoring (BSM), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Electronic-roll Mitigation (ERM) and Trailer-sway Control (TSC). In addition, security features, such as Sentry Key engine immobilizer, provide the ultimate in vehicle-theft protection.

For added customer benefit and value, Chrysler Group LLC has expanded the availability of many stability system features. TSC reduces trailer sway and improves handling in adverse towing conditions. TSC is offered on the Dodge Journey, Dodge Ram and the Jeep Wrangler. Hill-start Assist (HSA), which aids a driver when starting a vehicle on a hill, is available on the Dodge Challenger. ESP is now available or standard on all new 2010 models.

Safety and security features available on 2010 model-year Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles.

Active turn signals

Turn signal flashes three times when stalk is depressed for 1 second in order to indicate a lane change.

Advanced multi-stage air bags

Uses either an Occupant-classification System (OCS) or a Low-risk Deployment Air Bag to regulate the amount of air bag necessary for the front passenger.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions.

Anti-lock Brake System with rough-road detection

Anti-lock brake system is capable of detecting if the vehicle is driving on a rough road by the oscillations in the wheel speed signals. Rough road is detected on off-road surfaces or trails, and ABS enters a different pressure control where it will hold the brake pressure for longer pulses.

Auto-reverse sun roof

Advanced sensing system automatically engages and reverses the sun roof (to the open position) when an obstruction exists.

Auto-reverse windows

Automatically engages and reverses the window (to the down position) when an obstruction exists.

BeltAlert

Periodically activates a chime and illuminates an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver to buckle up if a vehicle is driven without being properly belted.

Child seat anchor system

LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) is designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats.

Child-protection rear-door locks

Disables the rear doors' inside-release handle via a small lever on the door-shut face.

Constant-force Retractors (CFR)

Distribute force or load exerted on a seat belt, and then gradually release seat-belt webbing in a controlled manner.

Crumple zones

Designed to compress during an accident in order to absorb energy from an impact, decreasing transfer of that energy to occupants.

Door Alert

Reverses sliding doors if there is an obstruction.

Digressive load-limiting seat belts

Retractor senses a vehicle impact and immediately applies a load to the seat belt in order to properly position the occupant before the full load of the vehicle impact is imparted onto the occupant. It then reduces the seat-belt load in order to moderate forces imparted onto the occupant during the impact event.

Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)

Adjusts braking pressure front to rear, based on weight distribution of passengers and cargo in order to minimize brake dive during hard braking.

Energy-absorbing steering column

The manual-adjust steering column utilizes two hydroformed coaxial tubes that can move relative to each other in order to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy absorption during a crash. The power-adjust steering column employs a calibrated-bending element that collapses during column stroke for optimal energy management.

Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS)

Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on interior lighting, flashing hazard lamps and unlocking doors after air-bag deployment. Also shuts off the flow of fuel to the engine.

Height-adjustable seat belts

Allows occupants to raise and lower the shoulder belt. This system encourages seat-belt usage by offering a more comfortable fit.

Hill-descent Control (HDC)

Allows smooth and controlled descent on rough or slippery terrain without the driver having to touch the brake pedal. The system applies brakes to each wheel individually when needed in order to reduce forward motion when negotiating down steep grades.

Hill-start Assist (HAS)

Assists drivers when starting a vehicle from a stop on a hill by maintaining the level of brake pressure applied for a short period of time after a driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal. If throttle is not applied within a short period of time after the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal, brake pressure will be released.

Inflatable knee blocker

An air bag for the driver's knees that deploys whenever the primary driver air bag deploys, helping position the driver relative to the primary air bag.

Inside emergency trunk release

A glow-in-the-dark release handle that may be activated in the event of an adult or child being inadvertently trapped inside the trunk.

Interior head-impact protection

Interior pillars above the beltline and instrument panel, including areas around the windshield and rear-window headers, roof and side-rail structures, and shoulder-belt turning loops specifically designed to limit head-impact force.

Low-risk deployment air bag

Front-passenger air bag uses unique shape, venting, folding patterns, advanced inflators or a combination of these four technologies to position and inflate the restraint properly for a belted passenger, while also meeting federal safety requirements for out-of-position, small occupants and rear-facing infant seats. Occupants are advised to always sit properly in their seats with the seat belt fastened. Children 12 years old and younger should always be seated in the back seat correctly using an infant or child restraint system, or have the seat belt positioned correctly for their age and weight.

Octagonal frame-rail tips

Designed to collapse in a controlled manner during a frontal or offset front impact, decreasing transfer of energy to occupants.

Occupant-classification System (OCS)

Measures the conditions for activation or deactivation of the front-passenger side air bag based on the weight of the occupant. Occupants are advised to always sit properly in their seats with the seat belt fastened. Children 12 years old and younger should always be seated in the back seat correctly using an infant or child restraint system or have the seat belt positioned correctly for their age and weight.

Power-adjustable pedals

Allows brake, accelerator and clutch (if equipped) pedals to move toward or away from the driver in order to help achieve a safe and comfortable seating position for improved vehicle control.

Rain-sensing wipers

A driver convenience feature that automatically senses moisture on the windshield and activates wipers.

Sentry Key engine immobilizer

Utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a pre-programmed security code to discourage vehicle theft. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the controller sends a random number to the transponder, and the engine is allowed to start. If an incorrect key is used, the engine will shut off after a few seconds.

Side-occupant protection system

Includes side-curtain air bags with extended up-time, tethers and roll-detection system that deploy in certain rollover situations and side-impact events. The system utilizes information from multiple sensors in order to determine the severity and type of the impact.

Signal mirrors

Signal lamp built into the housing of exterior mirrors allows turn signals to be viewed from the front, as well as the sides and rear of the vehicle in order to alert oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

SmartBeam headlamps

Supplemental side air bags

Provide enhanced protection to the driver and front outboard passenger in certain impacts. Supplemental side air bags are housed within the outboard side of each front seat.

Supplemental side-curtain air bags

Extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers, including third-row outboard passengers in vehicles so equipped. The system includes sensors, adjacent to both front-and rear-seat occupants, that are calibrated to deploy the side airbag and curtain during impacts that require air bag occupant protection.

Traction Control System (TCS)

Helps to keep driving wheels from spinning during acceleration from a stop or during slow speeds by applying individual brakes alone or in combination with engine torque limitation to prevent wheel slip.

Voice Command

Chrysler Group LLC's hands-free voice recognition system helps drivers keep their eyes on the road. Many features are operable using Voice Command, including selection of radio stations, SIRIUS satellite radio channels and navigation destinations. Voice Command is standard with Uconnect Phone.
