Chrysler buys interiors factory
According to the Guelph Mercury, Chrysler purchased a Canadian Collins & Aikman facility which was slated to be closed, and added the acquisition (along with other former C&A locations in Port Hope and Bellevile) to CpK Interior Products, Inc., which was formed in February. The unionized plant will be kept open for at least five years, possibly longer. The new division is headed by Doug Gouin, a Chrysler employee for the past 34 years.
The Guelph plant will make interior parts for the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Challenger (no mention was made of the Charger). It has operated under bankruptcy protection since 2008; Chrysler has been running the plant, which
currently employs 275 hourly workers, since at least that time. An additional 125 employees may be called back when sales rise.
Chrysler issued a statement that said, in part, that the plants “provide processes and technologies that support the creation of unique interior elements for our vehicles.”
