Chrysler awards UM-Dearborn researcher $3.1M
December 18, 2009
DEARBORN, Mich.
Chrysler Group LLC has awarded a University of Michigan-Dearborn researcher $3.1 million to help develop a full-size plug-in hybrid pickup truck.
Chris Mi, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, said in a release Friday that the university is the only one to work directly with an automaker on the federally funded project.
The university's share comes from the $48 million Chrysler received from the $2.4 billion in federal stimulus funds awarded this year to develop next-generation electric vehicles and batteries.
Mi's proposal calls for developing a Ram Crew 1500 that would be the only plug-in hybrid truck available, as well as the only full-size truck with advanced technology partial-zero emissions.
