Chrysler Canada today announced that the company’s retail sales increased 26 percent in December compared with the same month last year. Total sales for December were 13,822 versus 12,294 in 2008, up 12 percent. The results were led by continued strong minivan and Dodge Journey sales, rising Ram pickup momentum and strong demand for Jeep® brand vehicles.
Sales highlights
Combined sales of the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country were up 75 percent from 2008 to a total of 4,317 vehicles. The company’s minivans represented approximately three-quarters of all minivans sold in December in Canada. The Dodge Grand Caravan secured its position on the list of Canada’s top-five selling nameplates with sales of 40,283 units or the full calendar year.
Ram pickups recorded sales of 2,553 units (December 2008: 1,970 units), an increase of 30 percent. In December, the Ram pickup’s Heavy Duty version was named Motor Trend magazine’s 2010 Truck of the Year and Four Wheeler magazine’s 2010 Pickup Truck of the Year. The Ram pickup was 2009’s “most-awarded” pickup truck, receiving numerous honors throughout the year.
It’s official: the Dodge Journey completed the year by securing the title of No.1 selling crossover in Canada, outselling more than 30 competitive nameplates. The Dodge Journey posted December sales of 1,826 vehicles, an increase of 86 percent over the same month last year.
Sales of Jeep® brand vehicles gained 2 percent in December, led by the Jeep Grand Cherokee (up 22 percent on sales of 792 units) and the Jeep Patriot, which posted sales of 826 units, rose 30 percent. Sales of the legendary Jeep Wrangler climbed 8 percent, with 668 units sold.
“Retail sales up 26 percent is a great way to end a tough year,” Reid Bigland, President and CEO of Chrysler Canada, said. “We expect 2010 to be strong, as our all-new and refreshed vehicles start hitting the dealer showrooms. By the end of the year, 75 percent of our product portfolio will have received a major overhaul, and we think Canadians will be blown away by what they see from us.”
