Chrysler enters auto hauling business
Chrysler Group Transport Autohaul will create 100 jobs in Windsor

Jan 9, 2012

Chrysler is entering the auto hauling business.

The auto maker will create Chrysler Group Transport Autohaul and create approximately 100 jobs, which will go to former workers with Allied Systems.

The CAW has negotiated agreements which will create about 100 jobs in Windsor.

About 70 people will be hired for the new company, Chrysler Group Transport Autohaul. The auto warehousing company, Chrysler Yard, which already exists, will hire hire about 30 workers to compliment the new company.

The new jobs are not strictly for drivers. Dispatchers, mechanics, office and yard workers will also be hired.

The CAW has negotiated contracts that will see the new employees paid between $22 and $24 per hour.

Dino Chiodo of CAW Local 444 said it's less than what Allied Workers had been making, but Chrysler insisted on getting help to set up the new $11-million business.

"We've strategically sat down with them and went over the whole entire agreement and talked about the necessity to at least have a decent paying job," Chiodo said. "At the same time, [we did] what was necessary in order for Chrysler to get into the business."

Seniority will determine who gets the 100 new jobs in Windsor.

David Skidmore is a former Allied employee who helped negotiate the agreements. which he admitted aren't the best.

"But it's the best we could do," Skidmore said. "We didn't get enough jobs to cover everybody, but I think as a union we did a good job of getting as many jobs as we could."

Skidmore is optimistic the new hauling business will grow and create more jobs.

Approximately 300 workers in the province were laid off when Allied got into a contract dispute with Chrysler, GM and Toyota.

Allied wanted more money to haul their vehicles. The automakers refused.
