The 2012 Dodge Charger Pursuit set a course record and showed off its world-class acceleration, braking and handling during the annual Michigan State Police Evaluation Sept. 20, 2011, at Grattan Raceway, Belding, Mich. This clip gives you a glimpse of its performance.

The highlight of the MSP's Vehicle Evaluation was one of the laps turned in by the 2012 Dodge Charger Pursuit V-8: It chased the two-mile, closed course at Grattan Raceway** in 1:33.70 -- the fastest lap ever in test history.

“Even more impressive is that all four Michigan State Police Vehicle Test Team drivers averaged their fastest times in the Charger Pursuit – reinforcing the driver confidence provided when world-class acceleration, braking, handling and dynamics are combined," said VP of Network Development and Fleet Peter Grady.

In fact, the Charger Pursuit V-8 bested all other police cars in the following rapid acceleration categories:

0-to-60 mph: 5.83 sec
0-to-70 mph: 7.38 sec
0-to-80 mph: 9.18 sec
0-to-90 mph: 11.43 sec
0-to-100 mph: 13.65 sec

One of the Charger Pursuit V-8's sibling also held its own on the Grattan Raceway course:

The 292-horsepower Charger Pursuit V-6 models averaged the fastest times for naturally aspirated (1:37.71) and E-85 capable (1:37.57) six-cylinder police cars.

Now, before you go thinking we're just touting the police vehicle in the daily fight against crime, we all know that the police car is just a tool. Just like an officer's firearm. The true "high-performancers" in keeping us safe are the men and women in law enforcement.

Chrysler has spent much of 2011 releasing special-purpose versions of the Ram and its latest creation, the 2012 Ram 1500 Special Purpose serves a special purpose indeed. Among other things, this beefed up police-spec truck features an upgraded 220-amp alternator and an extra door support that allows departments to install ballistic material inside the doors.

2012 Ram 1500 Special Service Reports for Duty imagePowering the Ram 1500 Special Purpose is the standard-issue 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that makes the same 390 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque as in the civilian version and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. A 3.92 ratio axle is the only one offered and four-wheel drive is standard as well. The four-door crew cab is the only cab offered, though the RamBox storage system is available for departments that find it useful.

Along with the stronger alternator, Chrysler fitted this ram with what it calls the Power Distribution Center, which is gets power directly by the battery through two 100-amp fuses. The PDC is designed specifically to power camera, computer, modem, and printer systems. Additionally, the Ram Special Purpose’s wiring harness is pre-designed to handle the usual variety of police accessories such as light bars, sirens, and radar.

Inside the cabin is a modified instrument cluster that includes a certified speedometer, an engine hour and idle hour meter, plus a 110-volt inverter. The center column is removed to add space, while the shifter moves to the steering column. As is typical in police vehicles, the rear bench seat is covered in vinyl while the front seats receive stain-resistant cloth upholstery.

Though few police departments need the 10,000-pound towing capacity or the 1455-payload the Ram offers, rural outfits will appreciate the trucks durability and off-road capability and will plan on allocating some of their purchasing budgets when the Special Service becomes available later this month.
