With diesel power, the Panda averages 60.1 mpg for the 4x4, while the front-wheel drive Trekking achieves an impressive 67.3 mpg, with CO2 numbers of 125 g/km and 109 g/km respectively. So, instead of going for the diesel, you will be better off spending your spare £1,000 on optional extras, yet since the car already comes with chunky SUV-esque exterior styling, raised ground clearance with toughened suspension, 15-inch alloys, and all the essentials you could ever want on the interior, as standard, you might as well just pocked the difference.

Not all Italian sports cars have to be expensive as this Gandini-designed Bertone Fiat X1/9 so perfectly demonstrates.

Fiat has a long history of building genuine sports cars, but not necessarily those of the highest quality. Most owners can regale at least one incident of outright mechanical failure, but it's hard to deny these Italian-built cars exuded charm. They often represent the essence of driving enjoyment, even, to some extent, when stranded on the side of the road. As when standing totally motionless, Italian-made cars have that wonderful knack of making owners forgive them simply because they look so damn good.

Their designs are beautiful and passionate, attributes that are sometimes .....

Fiat building niche in U.S. auto market

Through sales increases and a plucky image, Fiat has made a mark in its first full year since re-entering the U.S. car market.

The Italy-based automaker sold 3,603 vehicles in this country last month, an increase of more than 120 percent from the same month last year.

In central Ohio, Bob-Boyd Fiat has sold 182 Fiat cars this year to local customers; last year at this time, the store had sold 75 since opening the previous April, according to Autoviewonline.com. Fiat has one vehicle in its U.S. lineup, the 500 subcompact.

“We’re definitely ahead of where we hoped to be,” said Matt Bond, the store’s general manager.

He moved from Internet-sales manager at Bob-Boyd Lincoln to opening the Fiat outlet, his first experience as the top manager at a dealership.

“It’s nice to see something grow,” he said. “It’s nice to see something that you started and see where it is today.”

Fiat left the U.S. market in the 1980s. It returned after its parent company’s purchase of Chrysler. Sergio Marchionne serves as CEO of both Chrysler and Fiat.

Bob-Boyd had the region’s Fiat market to itself until Dec. 15, when Crown Fiat opened in Dublin. Jody White, sales manager at the Dublin store, said he thinks the brand’s youthful image will be a good fit for the northwestern part of central Ohio.

The brand will sell nearly 45,000 vehicles this year at its network of about 191 stores. Starting soon, those stores will have more to sell, thanks to the rollout of variations on the 500, including an all-electric model, a four-door and a convertible. The latter was introduced with a provocative video featuring a model sunbathing and a description of the woman — and the car — as “ small, wicked and now topless.”

Fiat “has built up a following of consumers in a short amount of time,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president for industry analysis at Truecar

.com. “The trajectory of their growth certainly is positive.”

That said, Toprak thinks that national sales have only met, not exceeded, expectations. The brand accounts for a little more than 2 percent of sales of Chrysler Group, an umbrella that covers U.S. sales of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Fiat.

In all, Fiat is introducing five variations on the 500. Bond is particularly excited about the 500L, which has four doors and is slightly larger than the base 500.

Toprak thinks the brand would benefit by expanding its line to include a compact SUV that is already sold in other markets.

Fiat also has spoken about the possibility of reintroducing the Alfa Romeo, a sporty luxury brand that is sold in other markets.

Fiat has not said how it would allocate franchises for that brand, but Bond thinks it’s reasonable to expect that the first dealers to invest in Fiat and open stores will be first in line for the chance to sell Alfa Romeo.

“The Fiat is a super-fun car to drive; the Alfa Romeo (is fun, but with) luxury,” he said. “We’r e jacked up about Alfa.”

Billed as a 2015 model, the successor to the current gen Punto could come with a new name. The new car could be called the ‘Pandona’ and would employ a modified platform of the Punto.

The all new Punto, nay, Pandona could come equipped with a 1.6-liter Multijet diesel engine instead of retaining the very popular 1.3 Litre Multijet.

The successful criteria are set in stone, and the Panda ticks them off with relish. It’s inexpensive, is cheerily robust inside, swallows four adults, is cheap to run and looks cute.

Most important, it drives with a singular sense of itself. It doesn’t aspire to be a scaled-down saloon car like the VW Up; it’s a rough ’n’ tumble tyke with nimbleness and attitude to overcome its rival’s po-faced refinement.

Fiat’s boss has called the new model “the official car for doing whatever the hell you like”, and that sentiment rings true again and again. Certainly, the year ends with us having driven objectively better cars, but very few were as attainable or as easy to enjoy in a crowd as Fiat’s future classic.

So, what does the future hold for Alfa Romeo? According to an official Fiat Group document with Alfa Romeo's product plan, the company will invest around €1 billion (US$1.32 billion) through 2014 for the introduction of nine new models that will be sold globally, though the brand will primarily target the NAFTA (U.S., Canada and Mexico) and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) regions.

While the document does not name the cars Alfa Romeo plans to launch, it does reveal the segments they belong to.

These include replacements for the B-segment (sub-compact) Mito and C-segment (compact) Giulietta hatchbacks, three entries in the D-segment (mid-size), likely to be the sedan and estate versions of the new Giulia and possibly a crossover, an E-segment sedan to rival the BMW 5-Series, and three specialty models that will include the 4C Coupe, the Mazda MX-5-based Spider and one more vehicle.

In an official statement released on Thursday, Fiat said that it sold 838,219 passenger and light vehicles throughout the whole of last year, marking a 11.1% increase over 2011, when they sold 754,276 units in total. It also represents a 10.2% increase over the previous record, when in 2010 they sold a total of 760,495.

Fiat exceeded the natural growth figure of the entire Brazilian market, which grew by 6.1% to 3,634,510 deliveries in 2012.

Along with this sales record, however, they have also set a new all-time production record, building 12.5% more cars than in 2011 - 759,000 in total.

Fiat to open 100 dealerships across India by the end of 2013

In the first phase of dealership expansion, the company plans to target metros and tier-1 cities, he added.

He was speaking on the sidelines of inauguration of first exclusive dealership in the national capital region.

"The target of 70 exclusive dealership would be completed by March this year," Atansio said.

As part of the product expansion, the company will launch a sporty racy version called Punto Abarth in the third quarter of this year and launch Fiat-Chrysler's Jeep Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee in the fourth quarter.

In the second phase of expansion we will consider the tier 2 and 3 cities, he added. The next openings will be in Chennai, Thane, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru among others.

Fiat, which currently sells only two car models, Punto and Linea, has under 0.5 per cent market share in the domestic auto market, though it has been one of the oldest foreign brands in India having entered here as early as in the 1950s, first in association with the Mahindras and then with Premier Automobiles.

January 15, 2013 , Detroit -

Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A., Chrysler Group International LLC and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (GAC Group) have signed a framework agreement to expand their cooperation on passenger car manufacturing and sales in China.

The agreement was signed at Chrysler Headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich., by Zeng Qinghong, General Manager of GAC Group, and Mike Manley, Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Asia Pacific (APAC) region, Fiat S.p.A., and President and CEO of Jeep® Brand, Chrysler Group LLC.


According to the framework agreement, the joint venture between GAC, Fiat and Chrysler Group International, which currently manufactures Fiat Viaggio and distributes imported models such as the Fiat 500, Freemont and Bravo in China, will expand its operations to allow the localization in the coming years of more models from the Fiat portfolio to be introduced in the Chinese market. After Fiat, the next brand planned to be localized by the GAC Fiat JV will be Chrysler Group’s Jeep brand (production in China for Chinese market only.)

“Following the successful launch of the first product of our JV, the Fiat Viaggio launched last September, this agreement is another milestone of our partnership with Fiat and Chrysler Group. It definitely creates the basis for our JV to reach very ambitious objectives in Chinese market,” said Zeng Qinghong, General Manager of GAC Group.

“2012 was a fruitful year for us. In China, we’ve gained very positive feedback about the Fiat Viaggio. At the same time, Jeep Brand set an all-time sales record both in China and worldwide, which we are proud of,” said Mike Manley, Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Asia Pacific (APAC) region, Fiat S.p.A., and President and CEO of Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “The expansion of the agreement with our GAC partners will allow us to unleash the potential of both our Fiat and Chrysler Group brands in China.”

GAC Fiat Automobiles Co., Ltd.
GAC Fiat Automobiles Co., Ltd. (GAC Fiat), incorporated on March 9, 2010, is jointly invested by Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (GAC) and Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. (FGA) on a 50:50 basis with the initial investment of RMB 5 billion Yuan and authorized capital of 1.8 billion Yuan.

The Company is located in Changsha Economic & Technical Development Zone, covering an area of over 700,000 square meters. It is mainly engaged in the research and development, manufacturing, sales and after-sales services of vehicle, engines and parts & components. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 140,000 vehicles in Phase I and an annual capacity of 250,000 - 300,000 vehicles in Phase II. Currently it is producing Fiat Viaggio and the 1.4T-jet engine, and selling both local produced Fiat Viaggio and import products, Fiat Bravo, Fiat500 and Fiat Freemont. The plant provides direct and indirect employment to 3,000 people.
