Fiat Prepping “Baby” Jeep, Compass, Patriot Production Staying in U.S.

Arguably the biggest hole (well, holes) in Jeep’s lineup has been the Liberty, and the Patriot/Compass twins. Originally the plan for the latter models was to build a single replacement in Fiat’s Turin, Italy factory. If a new report by Automotive News Europe is to be believed though, the Compass and Patriot’s replacement will actually be built in the United States, and a new sub-Compass/Patriot “baby” Jeep will be built in Italy.
Originally, Fiat had planned on building the single replacement for the Compass and Patriot on its CUSW chassis in its Mirafiori factory in Turin alongside a similar Alfa Romeo. Instead, Fiat will install the tools to build vehicles on the smaller SUSW architecture. The change means that the replacement Jeep will likely be built alongside a new Alfa SUV in Chrysler’s Belvidere, Ill. factory.
As for the Mirafiori factory, Fiat will build a new entry level Jeep alongside a new Alfa Romeo subcompact, and the replacement for the Suzuki SX4’s kissing cousin, the Fiat Sedici.
The replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot will likely bow in the second half of 2013, with other models (such as the replacement for the Dodge Caliber) to follow soon thereafter.
