Chrysler Announces Price Hikes on 2010 Dodge Challenger

Chrysler Announces Price Hikes on 2010 Dodge Challenger

Date posted: 08-18-2009

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Chrysler on Monday announced price increases on its popular 2010 Dodge Challenger.

The base 2010 Dodge Challenger SE starts at $23,460, including a $725 destination charge. That is a $515 increase over the 2009 base Challenger SE, which started at $22,945, including a $725 destination charge.

The top-of-the-line 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 starts at $43,655, including a $1,700 gas-guzzler tax and a $725 destination charge. That is an increase of $1,010 over the 2009 model, which started at $42,645, including destination and gas-guzzler tax.

Earlier this month, Chrysler reported that it had sold 886 Challengers in July, versus 2,895 in July 2008, a 69 percent decline. However, it has sold 15,968 Challengers in 2009 calendar year to date, a 300 percent increase over 2008, Chrysler reported.

The new pricing puts the base 2010 Challenger in line with the pricing on the base 2010 Chevrolet Camaro LS, which starts at $23,040, including a $795 destination charge. The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS starts at $31,040, including a $795 destination charge.

Chrysler has yet to announce 2010 pricing on its Dodge Viper, something that should be interesting to watch given Fiat's input into the decision.

NEW WARRANTY COVERAGE ON 2010s

Chrysler is dropping its lifetime warranty from 2010 models, though it will remain on 2009 models. Instead, the company will provide a free 5 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, which, instead of being transferable, is assigned to the car itself, so that anyone who buys a used 2010 Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep second-hand, third-hand, etc., can get service without having to transfer the warranty.

Chrysler to raise Compass, Patriot prices

ROCKFORD — Chrysler Group LLC is raising the suggested retail price of its Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot models between 4.4 percent and 5.4 percent for the 2010 model year, the company announced last week.

Will the price be right?
Chrysler Group LLC is suggesting between a 4.4 percent and 5.4 percent increase in prices in 2010 for its Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot offerings.

http://content.gatehousemedia.com/fi...r%20prices.pdf

The company, which is now controlled by Italian automaker Fiat SpA, hasn’t released pricing for a several of its models, including the Dodge Caliber. The Caliber, Compass and Patriot are assembled by about 1,700 workers at Chrysler’s assembly plant in Belvidere.

But it’s not unusual for the company to increase the suggested price even in such a severe recession, experts say, because ultimately the MSRP means little.

“The manufacturers put such heavy incentives on vehicles that nobody really pays attention,” said Erich Merkle of Autoconomy.com. The average automotive manufacturer incentive was $2,735 per vehicle in July, according to Edmunds.com. “It may mean something on the Internet, though, because people tend to search for vehicles in certain price ranges.”

One thing Merkle, who heads the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Autoconomy.com, is certain of is that there are few price changes left for the vehicles in the Caliber era. Chrysler launched the line in 2006.

“There may be a 2011 model year, but I doubt they’ll change the prices,” Merkle said. “They’ll stop manufacturing those three in 2010 and begin building a subcompact for Chrysler and Dodge in 2011.”

When launched, the Caliber created long waiting lists and was one of the strongest domestic car launches of the decade.

But its underpowered engine and plastic interior soon curtailed enthusiasm and its sales have been carried by fleet buyers. The Compass caught on in Europe, but lagged everywhere else. The Patriot had the most promise and actually outsold the Caliber in the U.S. for the first time in July. It’s unlikely to survive Fiat’s cutting floor, though, despite its strong design ties to the old Jeep Cherokee.

Merkle said workers at the plant won’t be building Fiat’s small car, the 500, or any of its variants, which is expected to be built at Chrysler’s plant in Toluca, Mexico. Instead, Merkle believes Belvidere workers will be building a car based on Fiat’s Punto, a supermini that Fiat began building in 1993 and now is in its third generation.

Merkle doesn’t anticipate Chrysler to announce manufacturing changes this year, though.

“Fiat is still trying to figure out capacity,” Merkle said. “Chrysler is going to have to shut down more plants or find companies willing to utilize them, but there aren’t many opportunities out there.”

Question Lifetime warranty to return as an upgrade?

Lifetime warranty to return as an upgrade?

August 29th, 2009

While Chrysler’s lifetime warranty made a splash when it was first introduced, it seems that many, perhaps even most, customers did not believe in it, assuming that Chrysler was planning to drop support for the warranty through bankruptcy or an ownership change. (It did not help that at least one dealer losing their franchises called customers to claim that Chrysler was 100% owned by Fiat and had dropped all warranty coverage.)

Source oh2o, who has amassed a strong record for reliability, wrote that not only will 2009-model-year vehicles continue to have lifetime powertrain warranties, but that the company would offer that warranty as an option for vehicles with a 3/36 warranty (some exclusions would apply, for vehicles with diesels and other special cases). Chrysler will soon announce a new lifetime upgrade for 2010 vehicles with a 5/100 PT warranty, according to oh2o.
