Jeep Owners Might Get Their Own Playground

Toledo, Ohio might become a Mecca for Jeep Wrangler lovers, if a new plan comes to fruition.
The tough little off-roader will turn 70 next year (71, for those who count from the date it was designed, 70 for those who count from the date the first one rolled off the assembly line). Jalopnik reports, “The city of Toledo, Ohio wants to celebrate the anniversary.” The first Jeeps were built in Toledo, where original manufacturer Willy’s Overland turned out Jeeps for the Army during World War II. That first Jeep factory, however, was torn down in 2006. The lot where it stood has remained empty ever since.
Now, city leaders want to turn the site into an off-roader’s theme park for Jeep enthusiasts. The Toledo Blade explains, “The idea [is] to mark the Wrangler milestone by building a four-wheel-drive ‘playground’ on the now-vacant 70-acre site.” The site “still boasts the smokestack from the former Overland Company, along with more than enough land to create giant hills, mud bogs, and log and rock obstacles to demonstrate the Jeep's legendary ability.”
The city hasn’t committed funds to the project yet, but if it serves to draw thousands of Jeep enthusiasts to Toledo, it could provide economic stimulus to the troubled city -- and provide Wrangler owners with a great place to find out what their vehicles can do, trade stories and buy Jeep paraphernalia. Sounds like a win-win to us.
