Recall Alert Roll-Away: 2012-2014 Charger/300/Grand Cherokee

Statement: Shift Strategy

April 22, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 811,586 mid-size SUVs and full-size cars in the U.S. to reduce the effect of potential driver error by enhancing warnings and transmission shift strategy.

An investigation by FCA US and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found some drivers have exited their vehicles without first selecting “PARK.” Such behavior may pose a safety risk if a vehicle’s engine is still running.

The Company is aware of 41 injuries that are potentially related. The vehicles involved in these events were inspected and no evidence of equipment failure was found.

The vehicles affected by this recall are equipped with electronic shift levers that return to the same position after each manipulation. Gear-selection is conveyed to the driver by multiple sets of indicator lights, not gear-selector position, and unless due care is taken, drivers may draw erroneous conclusions about the status of their vehicles.

The vehicles also deliver warning chimes and alert messages if their driver-side doors are opened while their engines are still running and “PARK” is not engaged. However, investigation suggested these measures may be insufficient to deter some drivers from exiting their vehicles without selecting “PARK,” so FCA US will enhance the warnings and transmission-shift strategy on these vehicles.

The enhancements will combine warnings with a transmission-shift strategy to automatically prevent a vehicle from moving, under certain circumstances, even if the driver fails to select “PARK.”

Affected by this campaign are certain model-year 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans, and model-year 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Also subject to recall are an estimated 52,144 vehicles in Canada; 16,805 in Mexico; and 248,667 outside the NAFTA region.

Affected customers will be notified when service becomes available. In the interim, FCA US urges customers to follow the instructions in their owners’ manuals.

To address customer-satisfaction issues, the Company began equipping the Charger and 300 with a new shift-lever design in model-year 2015. The Grand Cherokee’s shift-lever was updated in model-year 2016.

Customers with questions may call the FCA US Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403

FCA Recalling More Than 800K Vehicles to Enhance ‘Park’ Warnings

Apr 22, 2016

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling 811,586 vehicles after it has been found that drivers have exited their vehicles without first selecting “Park” on their shifter.

According to FCA, the vehicles affected by the recall are equipped with electronic shift levers that return to the same position after each change. As a result, gear selection is conveyed to the driver by multiple sets of indicator lights, not gear-selector position, causing some drivers to draw erroneous conclusions about the status of their vehicles. Although FCA is aware of 41 injuries potentially related to the issue, it stressed that the vehicles involved were inspected and no evidence of equipment failure has been found.

Currently the vehicles also deliver warning chimes and alert messages if their driver-side doors are opened while their engines are still running and “Park” is engaged. The automaker and its investigation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have found that these measures may not be sufficient to deter some drivers from exiting their vehicles without selecting “Park.”

To address the issue, FCA will enhance the warnings and transmission-shift strategy on the affected vehicles to automatically prevent them from moving under certain circumstances, even if the driver fails to select “Park.”

Vehicles affected under the recall include the 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans, as well as 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Also subject to the recall are an estimated 52,144 vehicles in Canada, 16,805 in Mexico and 248,667 outside the North American region.

Question Did a Defective Jeep Kill Anton Yelchin?

Did a Defective Jeep Kill Anton Yelchin?

June 19, 2016

According to multiple news reports, promising young actor Anton Yelchin, known for his portrayal of Chekhov in the reborn Star Trek movie series, was killed when his Jeep Grand Cherokee pinned him against his mailbox at his driveway security gate.

The Jeep was parked on a steep hill but found in neutral gear when he was discovered dead.

Considering recent recalls with Fiat Chrysler Automobile shifters, could a badly designed shifter have killed the 27 year old? And could this be the first death attributable to the design flaw?

FCA’s Monostable shift lever acts unlike a traditional gear shifter. When it’s shifted into park, the lever returns to the middle position, regardless of whether it was placed in park or not.

The design flaw prompted a recall that included 2014-15 Jeep Grand Cherokees as well as 2012-14 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s as affected models. At the time of the recall, 121 accidents and 41 injuries were attributed to the flaw.

The model year of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in this unfortunate incident has not been detailed by police or friends of Yelchin.

Fiat Chrysler Investigating Roll-Away Incident That Killed Actor

Fiat Chrysler Investigating Roll-Away Incident That Killed Actor

Jun 21, 2016

Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was killed when pinned under his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles now says it will conduct an inquiry into the death of the Star Trek star. The Jeep Grand Cherokee in question was involved in a safety recall, which may have led to the accident.

According to Los Angeles police, Yelchin was pinned against a fence by his own vehicle after it rolled down a steep driveway. The actor died of his injuries at the scene. Suspicion has fallen on the gear shifter of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee which may cause the vehicle to roll away even when drivers believe they have placed it in Park mode. The gear shifter on the model is more akin to a joystick than a traditional shifter used for automatic transmissions.

Fiat Chrysler issued a recall in April for more than 1.1 million vehicles worldwide which have the same electronic gear shifter found in the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee after numerous complaints and accidents. Problems with the gear shifter have been linked to some 700 reported incidents, including 212 crashes and 41 injuries. Fiat Chrysler sent a letter to dealers in May saying it would have a software fix for the problem by July or August at the latest.

A Fiat Chrysler spokesman said there would be a “thorough investigation” of the accident.

Yelchin has had numerous film roles in his career and most-prominently appeared in the rebooted Star Trek film series, portraying the character of Chekov.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Set to be Recalled

Jeep Grand Cherokee Set to be Recalled Following Actor’s Death

Jun 22, 2016

FCA is readying a recall for the Jeep Grand Cherokee following the death of actor Anton Yelchin.

The automaker has sent its dealerships new software that can be installed to add a software-based “Auto Park” feature in the 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the intention of preventing the SUVs from moving if the driver’s side door is opened and the shifter is not in park. The company will begin notifying owners this Friday so that they can schedule an appointment with dealers. The software update will be available for 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with either the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine or the 5.7-liter V8. It will not work on the Grand Cherokees powered by a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine or the Grand Cherokee SRT with the 6.4-liter V8. Those vehicles will be recalled later this summer.

The recall comes following the death of Anton Yelchin, known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the latest series of Star Trek films. The 27-year-old was found pinned against the security gate of his Southern California home by a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was still running.

Maserati Recalls 13K Sedans

Maserati Recalls 13K Sedans Over Tricky Gear Shift

Jun 23, 2016

Maserati Recalls 13K Sedans Over Tricky Gear Shift

Maserati is the latest Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) brand to recall vehicles over the design and operation of the gear selector.

About 13,092 Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans are being recalled as drivers can mistakenly believe that the vehicle is in park, causing it to roll away.

Back in April, FCA recalled 1.1 million vehicles over this same problem as they use the same style of gear selector. The gearshift acts like a joystick, always returning back to the center position after the gear is selected. This has lead to many case of drivers mistakenly thinking that the vehicle is in park.

The 2012-2014 Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300 and 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is affected by the first recall.

That earlier recall was linked to 41 injuries, 212 crashes and 308 reports of property damage. A roll away of a Jeep Grand Cherokee is also being investigated as the likely cause of death for actor Anton Yelchin.

Maserati says that no injuries, crashes or roll aways have been reported in its vehicles. A software re-flash, that has just been rolled out for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, will likely remedy the problem.

Jeep owners sue Fiat Chrysler over gear selector defect
Suit will seek class action status

June 23, 2016

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Jeep Grand Cherokee owners are hitting Fiat Chrysler with a lawsuit over the design defect that is suspected in the death of "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin.

Law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLC filed the suit Thursday, claiming the company "fraudulently concealed and failed to remedy a gear shifter design defect affecting 811,000 vehicles and linked to driverless rollaway incidents."

Quote:
Those vehicles include 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees, 2012-2014 Chrysler 300s and 2012-2014 Dodge Chargers, according to the firm.

Additionally, Steve Berman, the firm's managing partner, said Maserati owners included in a recent recall could also join the suit. Maserati, which is owned by FCA, is recalling about 13,000 sedans that have the same sort of gear shifter that was used in the Jeep that killed Yelchin.

"In making these vehicles, Fiat Chrysler failed at adequately and responsibly designing one of the most basic safety features -- the gear shifter," Berman said.

The suit will seek class action status for the car owners, looking to force Fiat Chrysler to compensate them for the diminished value of their vehicles following the "raft of negative publicity" brought on by Yelchin's death, according to the complaint.

The suit doesn't specify how much it is seeking in total or for each car owner.

The death of Yelchin, 27, brought the gear shift issue to national attention when he was crushed by his Jeep outside his Los Angeles home on June 19.

According to law enforcement, Yelchin's Jeep rolled down his driveway and pinned him to a brick post in front of his Los Angeles home.

Fiat Chrysler did file a recall notice for about 1.1 million cars -- including the Jeep model that Yelchin owned -- with federal regulators in April, citing issues with the gear selector. But owners had only received a warning and not an official recall notice at the time of Yelchin's death.

More than 100 crashes have been reported due to a gear selector problem that caused driver confusion about whether the car was in park. More than two dozen injuries have been caused by these rollaways, according to federal reports.

The company did not immediately respond to CNNMoney's requests for comment.
