How to shift 3rd gear on my Nitro...

Hi to all. I buy a 2008 3.7lts Nitro. According to the specs, it has a 42RLE auto tranny and a 3.73 rear end. The pattern is P R N D 2 1. It has a tow/haul bottom near the shifter. The issue is that when I'm climbing a hill in a highway, start to shift from 4th to 3rd gear back and forward, depending on the speed. I try to shift it to 2nd, but it never shift to third gear. Then if I press the tow/haul bottom, it never shift to 4th gear after the hill.

The question is...

Any way to keep the 3rd gear as needed?

Do I have to run it on Drive always?

This tranny can't be used on 3rd gear or none of you know how to use it???

Don't have an answer myself, but doesn't your Owner's Manual cover towing options? Sorry and Good Luck with your Nitro!
