All set for Rossi v Stoner again

2 April 2010

With the first race of the new MotoGP season a week away, it is already hard to see past another battle between Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner for the title.

Certainly, that is the way it looked in pre-season testing, the first five days of which Yamaha rider Rossi dominated until Stoner stole his thunder on the final day in Qatar.

Rules changes have restricted testing to just six days, and that means those who got their homework right are more than one step ahead.

With Rossi's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo sure to need some time to fully recover from a hand injury and Dani Pedrosa in desperate trouble on the new factory Honda, old rivals Rossi and Stoner look like they will take some catching.

Lorenzo missed the second test in Malaysia in February after breaking a bone in his hand in a motocross training accident, adding to a catalogue of surgical interventions to the MotoGP grid during the winter.

The Spaniard was the first to go under the surgeon's knife at last season's end, with doctors removing a plate that had been fixed to his left collarbone since 2005 just two weeks after the final race at Valencia.

At the same time LCR Honda's Randy de Puniet had an operation to remove screws from his left ankle, which he had broken in the summer, while two days before Christmas Pedrosa had a screw removed from his hand.

Pramac Ducati's Aleix Espargaro had what is a routine operation for MotoGP riders to relieve compartmental syndrome (arm pump) in his left forearm, as did Ducati's Nicky Hayden, who then needed a clean-up procedure to remove scar tissue in February, between the two Sepang tests.

San Carlo Honda's Marco Simoncelli has avoided the surgeon's knife but he did require CAT scans in a Kuala Lumpur hospital following the worst of a series of confidence-sapping crashes in Malaysia - exactly the kind that knocked the stuffing out of James Toseland at the same time last year and effectively ruined his season.

Perhaps more of a danger to the MotoGP field than their own maladies, however, is a clean bill of health for Stoner, who has enjoyed a full pre-season without a visit to the doctors for the first time since winning the title in 2007.

Stoner spent last pre-season recovering from major wrist surgery and the winter before that struggling with an old shoulder problem that had previously affected preparations for his rookie campaign back in 2006.

Furthermore, the Australian is benefiting from the revitalised well-being of the Ducati Desmosedici GP10, which features a new 'big-bang' engine configuration and higher seat position amongst the most significant updates to the GP9.

The changes make the notoriously wild Italian stallion easier to handle, particularly in corner exit, and give it more pitch under braking and acceleration, giving the riders better feel for the tyres.
Perhaps more of a danger to the MotoGP field than their own maladies is a clean bill of health for Stoner

Hayden has benefited hugely from the modifications, ending third and fourth fastest respectively in the two tests at Sepang, Malaysia and Losail, Qatar, respectively, making him a contender for early podiums.

Changes to the Yamaha YZR-M1 factory machines of Rossi and Lorenzo have been of a more subtle nature, with testing focused mainly around finding the right electronic mapping for the new long-life engines. The overall performance of what was already the best bike on the grid has been evident in the preseason form of satellite pair Colin Edwards and standout rookie Ben Spies.

For my money Spies, whose ability to surprise is becoming less of a shock with every test, joins Hayden as an outside shot for a top-three finish in the opening race. With Lorenzo short of 100% fitness and preparation, the Americans are ideally placed to capitalize - especially with Honda in such dire trouble.

Andrea Dovizioso papered over the cracks with a quick late lap in Qatar to finish third but his pace throughout preseason has been inconsistent, whilst team-mate Dani Pedrosa has been consistently slow.

The HRC pair were told before the Brno race last August that they would be switching from Showa suspension to Öhlins for 2010 and whilst Dovizioso opted to do so immediately, Pedrosa stuck with the Spanish brand that he has used throughout his career until the end of the season.

So, while the Italian has finally begun to make progress with the opening race on the horizon the Spaniard is still going around in circles trying to find the right chassis stiffness for the new forks.

Pedrosa was a massive 1.5 seconds off the pace in Qatar, although he is not the only Honda rider with problems - the returning Marco Melandri and rookie pair Hiro Aoyama and Marco Simoncelli were three of just four riders slower than him at that final test.

Even a return to his traditional number 26 has failed to rescue Pedrosa, who has used two and three without much luck in recent seasons.

There are some other interesting numbers to look out for amongst the rookies this season, with Spies settling for 11 after missing out on his preferred 19 to Alvaro Bautista and Hector Barbera taking 40 in a shrewd sponsorship deal with Spanish pop chart radio station 'Los 40 Principales'.

Down one, fellow Spaniard Esparagaro is at 41 - cleverly incorporating the number to make the AL at the beginning of Aleix on his name graphics and logos.

Espargaro is not the only forward thinker in the Pramac Ducati garage, which will be splashed in garish green paint this season in an attempt to raise environmental awareness. The team plans to use solar panels and wind turbines to power their hospitality units and trucks, although they chose an ironic venue to launch the initiative.

The 3,600 light fixtures that illuminate the Losail circuit require 5.4m watts of power - enough, the owners proudly claim, to light a street from Doha to Moscow. And who provides the generators? You guessed it… Pramac.

Green is not the only new colour to be appearing on a Ducati this season, with Team Aspar stepping up to MotoGP with backing from Spanish telephone directory 'Paginas Amarillas' (Yellow Pages), meaning the combative rookie Hector Barberá will be very much the yellow peril of the premier-class.

However, with three wins from the last three visits to Qatar, it is likely to be the more traditional red Desmosedici of Casey Stoner that steals the limelight on 11 April.

MOTO2

British teenager Scott Redding established his credentials as a contender for the inaugural Moto2 World Championship in the final preseason test, which ended at Jerez on Monday.

Moto2, which features prototype motorcycles with identical Honda-powered 600cc engines, replaces the 250cc series as the feeder class to MotoGP this season.

Redding, 17, finished fourth overall after three days at the Spanish circuit, clocking a best time of one minute 44.394 seconds, 0.3secs behind Italian pacesetter Claudio Corti and marginally outside the 250cc lap record.

Redding, who became the youngest rider to win a Grand Prix with victory in the 125cc race at Donington Park in 2008, moved up from the minor category at the end of last season but has struggled to adapt to the bigger four-stroke machine over the winter.

However, he made a significant breakthrough during a private two-day session at Jerez last week and continued to improve throughout the final session, clocking up 170 laps and consistently running inside the top five on the timesheet.

"It has all come together during the last two tests here in Jerez and I'm glad to say we're now well and truly on the pace," said Redding.

"We've made some big steps forward with the set-up of the bike but the biggest improvement has come from me changing my riding style - I was trying to ride the bike like a 125cc machine, when it requires a very different style to get the best from it.

"Having been in the top five on the timesheet throughout these three days, we head for the first race in Qatar (on April 11th) knowing that we're on the pace, but I'm determined not to be over confident.

"We'll be aiming for a top-10 finish but, if I'm honest, I think top five could be a possibility if everything comes together for us. I just can't wait to get there and get the season started now!"

MotoGP Season Opener at Qatar, Rossi Wins
Sunday, 11 April 2010 16:48

Expectations were high for Ducati Marlboro rider Casey Stoner at the 2010 MotoGP season opener in Qatar, considering the Australian was fastest in practice, qualified on the pole and won the last three meetings there.

But while in the lead with 17 laps to go, Stoner crashed out, giving the lead to the man who is always expected to win, Valentino Rossi. And when the nine-time world champion gets into a rhythm, he usually wins…which is exactly what he did at Losail International Circuit Sunday, taking the 104th win of his career.

But the Italian’s win wasn’t easy, his Fiat Yamaha getting chased and caught by the Repsol Honda of Andrea Dovizioso numerous times during the 22-lap race in the Arabian Desert.

Starting on the grid from second, Rossi took the holehshot, only to be passed by Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa. Rossi retook the lead at turn 4, but on lap 2 Pedrosa’s Honda overtook Rossi’s Yamaha M1.

On lap 3, Stoner passed Rossi for second place, and then took first from the early leader, Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa. With 18 to go, Rossi was back in second place. Meanwhile, a few positions back, Tech 3 Yamaha rider Ben Spies was running in seventh.

Stoner began pulling away quickly, but on lap 17 he crashed out on turn 4, a double-apex right turn, giving the lead to Rossi. With 15 laps to go, the running order had changed; the top five in order were Rossi, Ducati Marlboro rider Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso, Rossi’s teammate Jorge Lorenzo and Pedrosa.

Dovizioso took second from Hayden with 14 to go, as Spies and Pedrosa battle for fifth. The ’09 World Superbike Champion Spies won the battle, keeping fifth and remaining unchallenged for the rest of the race. The MotoGP rookie had won both races in Qatar during last year’s WSBK season, where he took the title as a rookie.

Dovizioso took the lead from Rossi with six laps remaining, but Rossi quickly grabbed it back. As Rossi began pulling away, his teammate took third from Hayden and second from Dovizioso within a few turns.

Hayden would take third from Dovizioso on the final lap, but the Honda beat out the Ducati by 11 thousandths of a second at the line, giving the Repsol rider the last podium spot.

The Japanese MotoGP at Motegi has been called off because of air travel problems caused by the cloud of volcanic ash in Europe.

Circuit officials said next Sunday's race had been postponed and that details of alternative dates would be announced from the start of the week.

Reports suggest it may be moved to 3 October as round 14 of the championship before Malaysia and Australia.

The next round will now be at Spain's Jerez circuit on 2 May.

While most of the freight will have been flown straight on from last weekend's season-opener in Qatar the cloud of ash has created a no-fly zone over much of northern and central Europe and made it impossible for many team personnel to reach Japan.

Formula 1 teams, a majority of them British-based, and international media were already facing significant difficulties in returning from China after Sunday's grand prix in Shanghai.

News > Spanish GP: Fiat Yamaha qualifying report - Motorsport.com

Lorenzo On Front Row, Rossi 4th

Jorge Lorenzo put his Fiat Yamaha M1 on to the second spot on the grid in Jerez this afternoon, in an exceedingly close qualifying session which saw the first ten riders all within a second of one another. His team-mate Valentino Rossi will start from the front of the second row tomorrow, with Spaniard Dani Pedrosa heading the field for the 2pm race.

Lorenzo had looked in menacing form in the morning practice session, turning out laps in the low 1'39s with meticulous consistency. This afternoon was much warmer however and the Mallorcan found he was a couple of tenths slower in the sweltering heat, as he battled to extend his run of four consecutive poles at this track. With twenty minutes left he moved to the top of the standings but his lead was short-lived as his Spanish rival Pedrosa took over soon after. Lorenzo improved his time twice more but it was not enough to overhaul his compatriot and he eventually finished 0.285 seconds off pole position. The Yamaha man is feeling confident for tomorrow however and the Spanish fans have high hopes for an exciting battle between their two home favourites.

The World Champion found he was in much better shape today and in the end detained from taking any painkillers for his recovering shoulder. Instead he and his crew turned their attentions to improving the set-up of his M1, having lacked rear traction yesterday. Rossi definitely looked much happier this afternoon and indeed led the standings for the first forty minutes of the session before surrendering the lead to his team-mate and then slipping down to as low as sixth at one point. The Italian lost time on a fast penultimate lap when he had to pass another rider but his final push saw him improve significantly and haul himself up to fourth, just 0.047 off Stoner in third position.

Jorge Lorenzo
Position: 2nd Time: 1'39.487 Laps: 27

"I was very fast this morning and I hoped I would be again this afternoon, but we struggled a bit in the increased heat and couldn't keep up quite such a good pace. This morning I could ride exactly how I wanted, which was a great feeling, but in qualifying it wasn't exactly the same. Anyway, my lap time is not so bad and we are on the front row, which is very important. I am very excited about tomorrow and I feel confident that I can make a good race in front of the Spanish fans. This is a very special track to race at and I can't wait to hear the crowd!"

Valentino Rossi
Position: 4th Time: 1'39.558 Laps: 28

"Of course it would be better to be on the front row but fourth is okay and I'm very happy about how much we've improved since this morning. After Pedrosa, the next five of us are all very close and this afternoon I was able to do some laps in the 39s with the harder Bridgestone tyre. We are fast now but we're still not consistent enough so we have to work on this for tomorrow. My shoulder feels a lot better today and I have to say thank you to all of the Clinica Mobile and everyone who has worked on it. I am still lacking a bit of strength but the pain is okay. I am hoping for a great race tomorrow for all the fans."

"It was a lot warmer this afternoon and the session was hot in more ways than one; there's plenty of good racing rivalry between Jorge and his fellow Spaniard! We were very fast this morning and not quite as fast this afternoon but it's important to remember that there are no points for qualifying and we're just happy to be on the front row, which was our target today. The race conditions will be more like those of this afternoon and we had a good rhythm out there so we will be going for it tomorrow."

Davide Brivio
Team Manager

"We were all surprised and happy today to find that Valentino's shoulder was a lot better and that he was able to continue to ride without any painkillers. We will start from fourth tomorrow but we know we have the performance to fight; we just need to make sure we can maintain it for the race distance. We have a bit more work to do on the bike and some settings to adjust in order to make the tyre work better for us and then we will be ready."

MotoGP : 2010 Spain - Fiat Yamaha - Sunday race report

MotoGP report - Jorge Lorenzo produces the ride of his life to take rousing victory in Jerez.

Jorge Lorenzo produced one of the rides of his life to take a superb win in Spain today, the grandeur of a full to bursting Jerez providing a fitting amphitheatre for his first MotoGP win on home soil. Valentino Rossi finished third, making it a sixteenth double podium for the Fiat Yamaha pair since 2008.

Lorenzo got a bad start and had dropped from second to fifth by the second lap, as he struggled to find a rhythm with a full fuel tank.

On lap five he was able to pass Casey Stoner and then, five laps on, Nicky Hayden but he looked destined to stay in third as he languished 1.5 seconds adrift of Rossi, who was in turn the same distance from Pedrosa.

With a third of the race to go however the Spaniard picked up pace, suddenly the fastest man on track as he stormed up on his team-mate.

On lap 22 he despatched the Italian but with only five laps lef t and a two second gap a victory still looked unlikely.

The tenacious youngster was not giving up however in pursuit of a sixth premier class win and he rapidly gained on his fellow Spaniard to bring himself within striking distance on his penultimate lap.

His first attempt to pass resulted in a dramatic moment as they both momentarily looked like running off track and in the end he had to leave it to the last lap to make the definitive move, passing Pedrosa on the brakes at the end of the back straight and crossing the line 0.543 seconds ahead.

Lorenzo, who turns 23 on Tuesday, celebrated in hilarious style by leaping into the lake in the middle of the circuit, much to the rapture of the home fans who were already celebrating Spanish wins in the 125cc and Moto2 classes earlier in the day.

Rossi was happy to make the podium, having struggled all weekend to overcome his injured shoulder and set-up problems with his M1.

The World Champion got a great star t from the second row and was second behind Pedrosa for most of the race.

He stayed in touch in the early stages but began to drop back as his bike started to slide, eventually giving best to his charging team-mate and settling for the final podium spot and a valuable 16 points, 0.4 seconds behind Pedrosa.

The Championship is now led by Lorenzo with 45 points, while Rossi is four points off him in second. The riders now have a three week break before the French round at Le Mans on 23rd May.

Jorge Lorenzo
Position: 1st Time: 45'17.538
"It has always been one of my dreams to win a MotoGP race in Spain and this was like a movie, everything that could possibly happen did! It was a very hard race because I made such a bad start and then found it very difficult in the first laps, I gave myself a tough job to do. After that I started to feel better and rode like a demon to get to the front. Once I passed Valentino I knew that I couldn't take it easy, I had to try everything to win and it was all I could think about. I had a great fight with Dani and in one moment we nearly crashed so I had to try again, on the very last lap! I know it's better to win races calmly, from the front, but lately that hasn't been the way for us and I have had to fight on every lap. I saw the lake on Thursday and thought it would be funny to jump in and I think the fans liked it, but I didn't really think about how heavy I'd be with wet leathers and for a minute I thought I wasn't going to get out! This has been an amazing day, I can't believe I've achieved this dream of mine, in front of all the Spanish fans at this magical place."

Valentino Rossi
Position: 3rd Time: +0.890
"This just wasn't our race this year. We have struggled all weekend, first with my shoulder and then with the bike, and in the race today I couldn't do any more than third. I got a great start and was fast with the new tyre, I tried to go with Dani but then I started to slide a lot and I just had to play it safe. I made no mistakes and I'm happy about my race in the circumstances, these 16 points are very important. At the end I had a front row seat to the Spanish party and I admit I was sorry not to be involved, Jorge did a great job today and I think it was very exciting for all the fans. I want to say thank you to Dr. Costa and all the staff at the Clinica Mobile, plus everyone back in Italy who has worked on my shoulder to allow me to be able to race this weekend. I will hopefully be back to full strength in Le Mans so I'm looking forward to that."

Wilco Zeelenberg
Team Manager
"It's fantastic to win this race in this way. The race itself was amazing, especially the last ten laps; a fight on the edge. Before the race started our target was just to be on the podium again and we managed the highest step, so we could not ask for more! Jorge was so fast at the end of the race, really amazing. We have wondered why he seems to get much stronger at the end of races; I think it's a combination of his riding style and confidence, because from a technical point of view there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. Apart from a less than perfect start, he controlled the bike very well during and kept a very good pace. He was able to keep the pace at the beginning and never gave up; he just got better. The target for the season remains the same, to keep aiming for the podium every weekend. We all know there a re a lot of great riders out there and they all want to win, so it won't be easy. We have always been confident about our potential and now we are even more so. Well done to Jorge and all the team."

Davide Brivio
Team Manager
"Considering his recent injury we can see this as a very good result. The shoulder was okay and in fact the setting was the bigger problem, but the team did a great job to improve it as much as they could and we are happy that we made it onto the podium. Valentino got a fantastic start and was fast in the early stages but later on he couldn't keep pace with Lorenzo and Pedrosa so 16 points is good for us today. We have some work to do for Le Mans, when we hope Valentino will be back to full fitness. Well done to Jorge and all his side of the garage, he did a great race today."
