Auto supplier Continental AG to shut Alabama plant

Posted Tuesday, Sep 1, 2009, 1:11 pm in Employee News

German auto supplier Continental AG said it will close its plant in Huntsville, Ala., that makes powertrain and interior components by the end of 2010, the Detroit Free Press reported.

A Continental spokeswoman said the company decided to close the plant, which was once owned by Chrysler, after workers there voted against opening their contract, slated to expire in 2012, to consider concessions, the paper said. The supplier, whose North American headquarters are in Auburn Hills, Mich., had been seeking wage and benefit cuts from those workers, the Free Press said.

UAW 1413, which represents hourly employees at the plant, could not be reached for comment, the paper said. The company informed workers today of the plant’s closure. At full capacity, the plant employs 1,200 people. But due to production cuts, only 972 employees have been working there lately, the story said. (Detroit Free Press)
