A ban on the use of hand-held devices while driving will take effect throughout the Canadian province of Ontario on Oct. 26.
According to the Windsor (Ontario) Star, the new law will make it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or e-mail using hand-held cell phones and other communications or entertainment devices.
Drivers will have a three-month education or grace period, but beginning February 2010, police will levy fines of up to $500 for drivers caught using prohibited hand-held equipment, the article said. Ontario is the latest province to adopt such a law. Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec and Nova Scotia already have a similar ban being enforced, the paper said.
All drivers may use hand-held devices to call 911, according to the Windsor Star. A person may drive a motor vehicle while using a device in the hands-free mode or use an OEM global positioning system device that issued to provide navigation information, the story said.
Government studies show that a driver using a cell phones four times more likely to be in a crash than a driver focused on the road, the paper said. (Windsor Star)
