Chevrolet Aveo production moving to Michigan

Aveo production moving to Michigan

December 17th, 2009

The Chevrolet Aveo will be built in Orion Township, Michigan, according to a recent Automotive News report by Chrissie Thompson. The plant had made the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6, and was in competition with Spring Hill (TN) and Janesville (WI) for the work.

The Aveo is heavily based on a car engineered by GM acquisition Daewoo of Korea; starting in the 2009 model year, it was revised and retuned to better fit American tastes. The Aveo name might or might not be continued.

GM had originally intended to build the car in China, according to the report, but UAW concessions before bankruptcy changed GM’s plans. Issues around transport cost if fuel prices rice, quality, politics, and technology sharing likely also influenced GM to choose an American plant. Other vehicles are likely to be made at Orion as well; the plant has a capacity of 160,000 cars per year with two shifts. Over half of these would be the Aveo.
