The chief executive of Daimler AG is cautiously optimistic about the future of the German automaker, the Associated Press reported.
After high losses in the first half of 2009, Daimler would make a profit during the second half of this year, CEO Dieter Zetsche told German radio Deutschlandfunk on Sunday. Zetsche also said that Daimler wants to save 4 billion euros this year. He rejected speculation about job cuts at the Stuttgart, Germany-based company, whose brands include Mercedes-Benz, Smart, Maybach and AMG, the story said.
“Assuming that we are experiencing the beginning of a slow but steady recovery of the global economy and therefore also of the automobile markets, we do not have any plans for job cuts,” Zetsche said, adding that the company was also not planning to move production plants away from Germany.
Asked whether Daimler was interested in a closer cooperation with automaker BMW, he said that “we are competitors on the market and we are fighting for every customer. But we both understand that it makes sense to work together in some fields.”
He did not specify in which fields a future cooperation of BMW and Daimler would make sense, the story said. (Associated Press/The Detroit News)
