Daimler AG has begun offering discounts for the first time to American buyers of its tiny Smart car in the hope of reversing a steep slide in sales, the Financial Times reported.
Smart sold only 661 of its Fortwo model in the US last month, more than two-thirds below October 2008 and the lowest for any month since the car made its debut in the U.S. early last year, the paper said. While the drop in fuel prices over the past year has not revived Americans’ appetite for the biggest gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles, it has damped enthusiasm for very small cars such as the Smart, the Times said.
“There’s a belief that Americans’ tastes are changing,” John Wolkonowicz, analyst at HIS Global, a consultancy, told the paper. “The truth of the matter is that this will never happen.” Ford Motor reinforced that view earlier this week by deciding not to sell its Ka minicar in the U.S., the Times said.
