This day in history - Chrysler ramps up tank production for war effort

The year - 1941. 58 years ago today, Chrysler delivered its first M3 tank to the U.S. military. Several months later, in December, the U.S. entered World War II.
The M3 tank was one of nearly 22, 250 tanks produced at the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, or more than 25% of the Army’s total tank ordinance by the end of the war, according to the Macomb County, MI., Historical Commission. Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant in Warren, MI.
The Chrysler Warren, MI., plant helped earn the region the nickname Arsenal of Democracy. President Franklin Roosevelt called the effort ”an amazing demonstration of what can be done by the right organization, spirit and planning.”
The number of hourly employees assembling the tanks at the plant jumped from 230 to an estimated 5,000 in the next three years. (Detroit Free Press)
