Did you know? No bumper requirements for SUVs
News Release | December 2, 2010
Huge cost of mismatched bumpers:
When bumpers on cars and SUVs don't line up
(and many of them don't), low-speed collisions
produce more damage and higher repair costs

Currently there are no bumper requirements for SUVs, trucks and minivans. Passenger cars, however, have to have bumpers that protect a zone of 16 to 20 inches from the ground. A new study done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows just how costly this discrepancy can be in crashes where the bumpers are off set. The Institute conducted front-into-rear crash tests with seven pairs of 2010 and 2011 models involving a car and a SUV at 10 MPH. Only vehicles from the same manufacturer were tested together. The lowest total for damages came in at $850 compared to the highest vehicle which suffered damages of over $6,000. The IIHS says it’s necessary to have the same bumper regulations for cars and SUVs to reduce the cost of repairing vehicles. But for those who like to go off-roading new bumper requirements would compromise maneuverability. So we want to know, how would you solve this problem?
