Feds: 35.5 mpg rules on track

Posted Monday, Aug 10, 2009, 1:23 pm in Employee News

The landmark joint federal regulation to limit tailpipe emissions and boost fuel efficiency by 2016 is on track, a top White House adviser said this week, The Detroit News reported.

In an interview Thursday, Jody Freeman, a top environmental policy aide at the White House, said the proposed regulation that will require a fleetwide average of 35.5 mpg by the 2016 model year is on track and due out by late this month or early next month, the paper said. NHTSA and EPA plan to finalize the regulation by March 31, 2010, in order to allow the rules to take effect by the 2012 model year, the News said.

Freeman said there are no plans to back away from allowing automakers that sell fewer than 400,000 vehicles to meet a less stringent standard for emitting greenhouse gases through the 2015 model year, the paper said. That plan mirrors rules in California that gave smaller automakers a break, the story said. (The Detroit News)
