Ford discusses status of union talks with UAW

Posted Friday, Sep 11, 2009, 11:53 am in Employee News

Ford Motor Co. spoke for the first time on Thursday about the status of its talks with both the UAW and the CAW since meeting with the unions in recent weeks, the Detroit Free Press reported.

While Ford is seeking contract modifications, it’s not because of a short-term competitive cost disadvantage with either union, Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s vice president of global manufacturing and labor affairs, told the Free Press. However, Hinrichs said that General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC did obtain labor modifications that give the those companies long-term cost advantages over an agreement Ford reached with the UAW in February, the paper said.

Hinrichs declined to outline specific areas, the story said. However, union sources have told the Free Press that Ford is seeking a reduction in skilled trade classifications and a freeze in entry level hiring wages or benefits from the UAW. (Detroit Free Press)
