Ford Motor Co. will invest $450 million in Michigan as part of a plan to expand production of electric vehicles and battery packs, a move Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. said will create 1,000 new jobs in the state by 2012, The Detroit News reported.
Ford made the announcement Monday with Gov. Jennifer Granholm at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the paper said. Granholm said the state will provide Ford with $188 million in incentives and tax credits, the News said.
Ford’s investment comes on top of the $550 million the company already has earmarked to transform its former Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne into a state-the-of-the-art small car facility, the News said.
In addition to building the new Ford Focus compact the automaker unveiled here Monday, Ford now plans to produce a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric version of the vehicle at the factory, according to the story. (Detroit News)
