Ford Motor Co. said today it will resume production at an Ohio plant that will become the world’s first to produce one of a new family of engines that offers better fuel economy.

Ford has invested $55 million for tooling and equipment upgrades to build the EcoBoost engines at Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, which was idled in 2007.

The 3.5 liter six-cylinder engines use direct injection and turbochargers to improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent. The company expects to make the engines available on more than 90 percent of its North American lineup by 2013. (Automotive News)
