Ford Motor Co. revealed wide-ranging new plans Thursday for an engine technology it will use to improve fuel economy across its model line, according to a story in today’s Detroit Free Press.
The story said the engines will be available in 90 percent of Ford’s models by 2013, when the company expects to build 700,000 of the engines annually in the United States and 1.3 million around the world. The system Ecoboost combines turbocharging with direct injection of gasoline will allow Ford to replace larger engines like V-8s with smaller, more fuel-efficient engines like V-6s, the story said.
The Ecoboost system will debut this summer on performance versions of the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans and Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT crossovers, the Free Press said. Ford also plans to add the system to smaller four-cylinder engines and a new fuel-efficient V-6 version of its best-selling F-150 pickup next year, the article said.
