Ford seeks new union talks

Ford Motor Co. wants to talk to the UAW about additional modifications to its labor agreement, a Ford vice president said Wednesday, even though UAW members just ratified new cost-saving changes in March, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker wants to revisit its agreement with the UAW because the union ratified an agreement last week with Chrysler LLC that goes even further to save the rival automaker money, Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s vice president of global manufacturing and labor affairs, told the News.
“Clearly we don’t want to be disadvantaged,” Hinrichs said after Ford announced plans to invest $550 million at its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne. “There are differences in the Chrysler agreement that we are interested in talking about.”
UAW Vice President Bob King said the UAW’s goal is to help Ford remain competitive. But for now, he said the UAW’s is consumed with Chrysler’s bankruptcy and General Motors Corp.’s reorganization. (The Detroit News)
