Ford stays patient on UAW pact changes

Ford Motor Co. has outlined the differences it sees between its labor contract with the UAW and the contracts the union reached last spring with General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s vice president of global manufacturing and labor affairs, told a group of financial analysts that the three main differences between its deal and the ones with GM and Chrysler are: a wage freeze for entry-level workers, variation in the number of skilled-trades job classifications and a binding arbitration clause, the Free Press said.
“Those are the three differences and none of them have a near-term disadvantage but we have some concerns…and we are having those discussions,” Hinrichs said.
Previously, Ford has said it would like additional changes to its contract with the UAW that relate to “long-term” issues, but declined to identify the area, the paper said. Hinrichs said GM and Chrysler received agreements that freeze entry level wages at about $16 an hour—an element that wasn’t included in contract changes that Ford’s UAW workers ratified in March.
