Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally unveiled a new small car in India today and also is scheduled to travel to China for announcement there on Friday, the Detroit Free Press reported.
At an event in the city of Delhi, Mulally said production of the Ford Figo will begin next year, the paper said. The Figo will be manufactured at Ford’s plant near Chennai, India. Ford is investing $500 million to double the annual production of that plant to 200,000 units, the Free Press said.
The Figo is a new nameplate for Ford. According to the Free Press, the car is based on a small-car platform Ford uses for a version of the Ford Fiesta it sells in India, but is different from a platform used to produce the Ford Fiesta in Europe.
On Tuesday, Ford declined to comment on reports that it plans to build a new manufacturing plant in Chongqing, China, but confirmed that Mulally plans to be there on Friday for an announcement, the paper said. Analysts said it makes sense for Ford to expand its production capacity in both India and China, the story said. (Detroit Free Press)
