When General Motors Corp. emerges from bankruptcy reorganization, Edward E. Whitacre Jr., the former chairman and chief executive of AT&T Inc., will be chairman, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Whitacre, 67, currently serves on the boards of ExxonMobil Corp. and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., the Free Press said. He holds an industrial engineering degree from Texas Technological University, the paper said.
Kent Kresa, GM’s interim chairman, will continue in that role until the new GM is launched later this summer, the Free Press said. Kresa also will serve on the new GM board along with current GM board members Philip Laskawy, Kathryn Marinello, Erroll Davis Jr., E. Neville Isdell and GM President and Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson, the paper reported.
According to the Free Press, six other members of the current GM board will likely retire no later than the date when the sale of GM’s assets are approved. The new board will have 13 directors, with the UAW health care trust and Canadian government each appointing one board member, the story said. (Detroit Free Press)
