GM Recalls 277,000 of Its 2009 Vehicles over Shifter Problem

Date posted: 03-17-2009

WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 276,729 vehicles from the 2009 model year because of a shift problem that could cause a parked vehicle to roll away, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall involves the 2009 Buick Enclave; the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR, Malibu and Traverse; the 2009 GMC Acadia; the 2009 Pontiac G5 and G6; and the 2009 Saturn Aura and Saturn Outlook.

"On some of these vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may not be fully engaged," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "If the clip is not fully engaged, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. With this condition, the drive [sic] could move the shifter to 'Park' and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in 'Park.'

"The driver may not be able to restart the vehicle and the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible crash without prior warning."

In other documents filed with NHTSA, GM notes that "review of 2009 warranty [claims] indicated there are low-mileage incidents where the adjustment clip became disengaged from the slider. Many of those claims resulted in a vehicle that would not start."

Dealers will check to make sure that the shift cable adjustment clip is fully engaged. If it does not engage, it will be replaced for free. The recall is expected to begin March 24. Owners may contact Buick at (866) 608-8080, Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438, GMC at (866) 996-9463, Pontiac at (800) 620-7668 and Saturn at (800) 972-8876.
