Automotive News is reporting that General Motors is negotiating with Toyota Motor Corp. to jointly produce a new GM vehicle to replace the Pontiac Vibe. GM has announced it is phasing out the Pontiac brand by 2010.
According to the story, GM and Toyota have been building small cars together since 1984 under a joint venture, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., or NUMMI. The Vibe is currently the only vehicle jointly produced from the GM/NUMMI joint venture.
A GM spokesman said that, if successful, the negotiations would mean a new model for one of GM’s surviving brands — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac. (Automotive News)
