General Motors Co. today said its U.S. August sales were “far and away” the automaker’s strongest of the year, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Nevertheless, GM’s sales fell 20.2 percent in August, to 246,479 cars and trucks, compared with the same month a year ago, the paper said.
GM said its retail sales were down 17 percent, while fleet sales were down 29 percent, the Free Press said. GM’s car sales, bolstered by the government’s cash-for-clunkers program, were down 1 percent for August, but sales of GM’s truck plummeted 28 percent compared to the same month a year ago, the story said.
