General Motors Co.’s next chief executive officer will come from outside the company, and government pay restrictions won’t stand in the way of attracting the right candidate, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Lutz said that the government has signaled that GM could get dispensation from guidelines to hire a CEO to replace Fritz Henderson, who resigned Tuesday, the paper said. The best candidate “is going to get a competitive package,” Lutz told reporters at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Lutz said that the new CEO would “very definitely” be an outsider, the paper said. Lutz suggested board members would have a tall order for the CEO: “Clearly, they would want the world’s best businessman with a deep automotive background, huge credibility, fast on his feet, charismatic personality, able to convince investors that they should invest in the stock,” the story said.
