Honda may boost overseas output due to stronger yen

Honda Motor Co., Japan’s second- largest automaker, may boost overseas production to offset the effect of a stronger yen, President Takanobu Ito said and Bloomberg reported.
“If we can expect the yen to be strong for a long period of time, we may have to see if we need to shift to local production,” Ito said at the Tokyo Motor Show today. The automaker also may have to review its supply strategy, he said, the news service reported.
The yen has strengthened 11 percent in the past year against the dollar, eroding Japanese carmakers’ repatriated profit from overseas sales, the news service said. Honda said yesterday it may move production of its Fit compact car to the United States from Japan, adding that details including a timeline or location haven’t been decided, the story said.
