Hyundai will deliver plug-in electric to U.S. in 2012

The Automotive News is reporting that Hyundai will launch its first plug-in electric vehicle the United States in late 2012.
The vehicle, which can travel as much as 38 miles on electricity only, will be based on the four-door Blue-Will sports car concept on display now at the auto show in Seoul, according to Yang Woong-chul, president of Hyundai-Kia Motors’ research and development organization, the story said.
The plug-in will target the upcoming Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius plug-ins, according to an executive quoted in the story. The Blue-Will sits on a 106-inch wheelbase and is powered by a 1.6-liter gasoline direct-injection engine teamed with a 100-kilowatt electric motor. Hyundai has developed its own lithium ion battery, the article said.
