Incentives lift Japan auto sales

Japan’s domestic auto sales rose sharply in December from the previous year, suggesting that government incentives continue to support an industry reeling from a strong yen and weak sales in the United States and Europe, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Sales of new cars, trucks and buses jumped 36.5 percent in December from a year earlier as government measures lifted demand for fuel-efficient cars, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said, marking the fifth consecutive monthly rise after a 36 percent surge in November, the Journal said.
The outlook for Japan’s auto market looks encouraging after the government decided to extend subsidies—initially scheduled to end in March—by six months to continue promoting the scrapping of vehicles older than 13 years in favor of the purchase of new fuel-efficient ones, according to the story.
