To the auto industry.... Executives believe a federal grant will "kick start" the advanced battery production industry in Michigan. Governor Jennifer Granholm toured one of several companies that received federal support this week. A123 Systems Inc. said they'll develop lithium-ion battery technology for Chrysler Group LLC.

"If we're really going to be free of foreign oil we have to have the means to control our energy independence here and not outsource that. So this is why this decision yesterday by the federal government to give such a huge emphasis you know 2.4 billion dollars into making our nation free of foreign oil. More than half of that coming to Michigan. More than half of that coming to Michigan. (APPLAUSE) It's huge!"
The new facilities will be built in three Detroit suburbs. The government issued more than two-billion-dollars in grants for 48 projects in 25 states to develop next generation electric vehicles and batteries.
