Volkswagen AG will drop the Rabbit name from its compact hatchback this fall, according to the Detroit Free Press, just three years after it revived the name and saying that nostalgia was a key to American sales success.
The new, sixth-generation of VW’s compact sedan will return to the Golf name the car uses everywhere else in the world when it makes its U.S. debut at the New York Auto Show next week, the paper said. The 2010 Golf will go on sale in the United States this fall, according to the paper.
VW’s decision to take on the expense of introducing a new name and buying new badges for its cars never made sense to anybody but the executives who thought Americans’ pent-up longing for cutesy chrome badges was the only thing holding the car back, The Free Press said.
