Last-minute cash-for-clunker applications
Glitches continue to last minute but dealers still delighted

A flurry of last-minute cash-for-clunker applications Monday caused the government’s computer to crash yet again, giving more administrative headaches to dealers who’ve been complaining for weeks they aren’t getting paid fast enough, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The meltdown prompted the Obama administration to extend the 8 p.m. Monday deadline for dealers to file documentation until noon today, the paper said. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a further extension may be granted depending on when the problems are resolved, and promised an update today, the Free Press noted.
Despite the glitches, new-car dealers overrun with shoppers during the last few days called the cash-for-clunkers program a wild success as it ended its 32-day run Monday, the paper said. The program is expected to lift August auto sales to the highest level in months. By early Monday, at least 625,000 vouchers, totaling $2.58 billion, had been submitted, the story said.
