Layoffs averted at Toledo Jeep as 635 accept buyouts, saving full-time jobs
The number taking buyouts means that "we don't anticipate anyone being laid off," Mr. Henneman. "The company was forecasting that only 200 would take the buyout, so this is great for us."
Workers who would have been laid off will be trained to take over for those leaving as part of the buyout, he said.
The Nitro and Liberty assembly lines have been idled this week as part of a scheduled shutdown announced last fall along with the cuts. When workers return next week, training will begin to allow those taking the buyouts to leave by the end of February and March.
Liberty sales in North America dropped 31 percent last year to 92,105 units, and Nitro sales of 74,825 units were fewer than Chrysler officials anticipated. The local Jeep complex also makes Jeep Wranglers.
